Peter Stent
Peter Stent (c. 1613–1665) was a seventeenth-century London printseller, who from the early 1640s until his death ran one of the biggest printmaking businesses of the day. Stent originally was an engraver himself. Edward Calver wrote verses to a set of Stent's plates from 1635. He then sold works of other artists, such as John Dunstall, John Fillian, Richard Gaywood, and George Glover. He also recycled plates he had acquired, in new printings: for example of the penmanship of Martin Billingsley, by George Gifford, from Sir Robert Peake and Thomas Rowlett via Thomas Hinde. John Overton (priest)
John Overton (1763–1838) was an English clergyman, known for his defence of evangelicals at the start of the 19th century. Life Overton was born at Monk Fryston in Yorkshire, where his father was a small landed proprietor. He attended the village school there, and went to Magdalene College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. in 1790. Magdalene was then beginning to be an evangelical stronghold; he took an ordinary degree. Having received holy orders, Overton became assistant curate to William Richardson of York, a leading evangelical. He remained with Richardson until 1802, when he was appointed, through the influence of William Wilberforce, to the chancellor's livings of St. Crux and St. Margaret's in the city of York. In politics Overton was a Tory and admirer of Pitt the younger. He took an active part in promoting the election of Wilberforce to parliament. John Overton (judge)
John Overton (April 9, 1766 – April 12, 1833) was an American planter and slave trader, a judge at the Tennessee Supreme Court, a banker, political leader, and an advisor of Andrew Jackson. He was described in 1889 as having been the "wealthiest man in the State." Early life and career Overton was born on April 9, 1766, in Louisa County, Virginia. His parents were James Overton and Mary Waller. In 1787, he began his law career and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1789, to practice law at the Davidson County court. He was elected to succeed his friend Andrew Jackson as a member of the Tennessee Supreme Court in 1804, where he served as a judge until 1810. His elder brother Thomas Overton served as Jackson's second in his duel with Charles Dickinson. In 1819, he founded Memphis, Tennessee on land he owned with Andrew Jackson and James Winchester. John Henry Overton
John Henry Overton, VD, DD (hon) (1835–1903) was an English cleric, known as a church historian. Life Born at Louth, Lincolnshire, on 4 January 1835, he was the only son of Francis Overton, a surgeon of Louth, by his wife Helen Martha, daughter of Major John Booth, of Louth. Educated first (1842–5) at Louth grammar school, and then at a private school at Laleham, Middlesex under the Rev. John Buckland, Overton went to Rugby School in February 1849. He obtained an open scholarship at Lincoln College, Oxford. A sportsman, he was placed in the first class in classical moderations in 1855 and in the third class in the final classical school in 1857. He graduated B.A. in 1858, and proceeded M.A. in 1860. In 1858 Overton was ordained to the curacy of Quedgeley, Gloucestershire, and in 1860 was presented by J. L. Fytche, a friend of his father, to the vicarage of Legbourne, Lincolnshire.
