John Oldfield (engineer)
John Arthur Oldfield (13 January 1937 - September 2002) was a British engineer, and a former senior Ford executive and designer. Early life He was born in Stepney. His family moved soon after to Essex, and he had 4 younger siblings. He was the son of George Oldfield and Alice Bunker, who married in Essex in 1935. He attended the Cranfield Institute of Technology (Cranfield University), gaining an MSc. Career Ford He joined Ford in 1958, at the age of 21. In 1970 he was the Ford chassis engineering manager at Dunton. He became head of the £3bn design project for the Ford Mondeo (CDW27) in May 1986 from Ford Dunton, which was launched in March 1993 at the Geneva Motor Show. The car was made at Genk Body & Assembly in Genk, Belgium, which was to produce around 350,000 a year. At its peak, the Mondeo design team at the Dunton Technical Centre and Merkenich in Germany had 800 engineers. He was head of Mondeo design for six years up to its launch. Stepney is an area in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End of London. Stepney is no longer officially defined, and is usually used to refer to a relatively small area. However, for much of its history the place name was applied to a much larger manor and parish, which covered most of the inner East End. David Lewis John Price (born March 1943) is a British engineer, and a former senior executive at Ford of Europe and Aston Martin. Early life He was born in Ilford, Essex. His father was Welsh. He did not go to university. Career Ford He joined Ford in 1964. In the mid-1980s he was Director of Powertrain Programmes. He was the programme manager for the Ford Mondeo from 1988, replacing John Oldfield, to the early 1990s, of which the first model was launched in 1992. Lindsey Halstead was Chairman of Ford of Europe at the time. The final design model chosen for the Mondeo was design 5H, which was arrived at in May 1990 at the Dunton Technical Centre, and would be manufactured at Genk Body & Assembly from 23 November 1992, going on sale on 8 January 1993.
