John of Carlowitz (''Hans von Carlowitz'', born 1527; died 24 April 1578) was a German official. In 1575, he was appointed governor of the District of Schwarzenberg and Crottendorf Crottendorf is a municipality that is located in the district of Erzgebirgskreis, in Saxony, Germany. Barony Of Schwarzenberg
The Barony of Schwarzenberg () was a domain that emerged in the middle of the 12th century in the Saxon Ore Mountains in central Europe. It continued to exist following its acquisition by John Frederick the Magnanimous in 1533 as an administrative unit of the Electorate of Saxony under the name of Amt Schwarzenberg and acted as the regional focal point, until the end of the Saxon '' Amt'' constitution, for the collection of baronial contributions and coordination of socage, for law and order and military service. Geography The barony was bordered by the Vogtland region to the east, and extended south into the forests on the ridge of the Western Ore Mountains from the Auersberg mountain to the Fichtelberg, and was bounded by the rivers Schwarzwasser, Pöhlwasser and Große Mittweida. Saukrieg
The so-called Saukrieg ("Pig War") of 1555–1558 was a feud between John of Carlowitz and Zuschendorf and the Bishop of Meißen, John IX of Haugwitz. Weber (1836), p. 120. During the course of the feud, Carlowitz had 700 pigs, belonging to the bishop's subjects, driven away in order to pursue his claims, which explains the rather unusual name of the feud.Ziehnert (1839), p. 214. The ''Saukrieg'' has been described as the last feud "in the spirit of the Middle Ages".Brockhaus (1847), p. 565. In 1555 the brother of John of Carlowitz, Nicolas II of Carlowitz, Bishop of Meißen, died. He was succeeded by Bishop John IX of Haugwitz. Because of the bishop's inheritance, a dispute arose between him and the dead brother's sons, in particular John of Carlowitz and Zuschendorf.
