John N. Mather
John Norman Mather (June 9, 1942 – January 28, 2017) was a mathematician at Princeton University known for his work on singularity theory and Hamiltonian dynamics. Biography He was descended from Atherton Mather (1663–1734), a cousin of Cotton Mather. His father, Norman Mather, was a Princeton University professor of electrical engineering. He spent his undergraduate years at Harvard University (BA 1964) and his graduate years at Princeton University (Ph.D. 1967). In 1969, after two years spent at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, Mather was appointed Associate Professor at Harvard University. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1971. One of his students at Harvard was Bill Gates. In 1974 Mather accepted a visiting Professorship at Princeton University, joining his father on the University faculty. Mathematical Research Institute Of Oberwolfach
The Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics () is a center for mathematical research in Oberwolfach, Germany. It was founded by mathematician Wilhelm Süss in 1944. In mathematics, a differentiable manifold (also differential manifold) is a type of manifold that is locally similar enough to a vector space to allow one to apply calculus. Any manifold can be described by a collection of charts (atlas). The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is an independent center for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry located in Princeton, New Jersey. Cotton Mather (; February 12, 1663 – February 13, 1728) was a Puritan clergyman and author in colonial New England, who wrote extensively on theological, historical, and scientific subjects.
