John N. C. Schenck
John Noble Cummings Schenck (January 24, 1778 - October 26, 1867) was an American pioneer and early postmaster of the Northwest Territory. Early life John N.C. Schenck, son of Rev. William Schenck, was born January 24, 1778, in Churchville, Pennsylvania. His father had the chief supervision of his education, combined with facilities as were to be found in Ballston, New York, and Huntington, New York. Like his brother William Cortenus Schenck, John went to the Northwest Territory. Life in Ohio Once arriving in Cincinnati, John made connections with local businessmen, such as Martin Baum, and established himself as a very savvy businessman. At the insistence of Mr. Baum and his brother, John moved permanently to Franklin, Ohio, around 1801 to establish a point of trade there. Log Cabin
A log cabin is a small log house, especially a less finished or less architecturally sophisticated structure. Log cabins have an ancient history in Europe, and in America are often associated with first generation home building by settlers. Franklin Post Office
The Old Log Post Office, also known as the Franklin Post Office is an historic building located in Franklin, Ohio. Built in 1802, the two-story log cabin is the oldest surviving post office in the state and the oldest building in Franklin. On April 1, 1805, President Thomas Jefferson appointed the first postmaster, John N. C. Schenck. The post office was his home. It was originally at 310 River Street but was moved to its present site near the corner of 5th and River streets in 1974. A portion of the Great Miami River Recreation Trail, a bicycle trail, now passes by the post office. On March 17, 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Franklin, Ohio
Franklin is a city in Warren County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,771 at the 2010 census. The Great Miami River flows through Franklin. Ohio State Routes 73, 123 and 741 pass through Franklin, while Interstate 75 passes on the east side of the city. History Franklin was founded by General William C. Schenck, in 1796. The settlement was named for Benjamin Franklin. Franklin was incorporated in 1814, and became a city in 1951. One of the first four post offices in Warren County was established in Franklin in 1805.
