John Michael Schmitz
John Michael Schmitz Jr. (born March 19, 1999) is an American football center for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Minnesota, where he was named a first-team All-American. Early years Schmitz was born on March 19, 1999, in Flossmoor, Illinois, and attended Homewood-Flossmoor High School. Schmitz initially committed to play college football at Western Michigan under coach P. J. Fleck. He later flipped his commitment to Minnesota after Fleck was hired there. College career Schmitz redshirted his true freshman season at Minnesota. He played in all 13 of the Golden Gophers' games as a redshirt freshman, appearing mostly on special teams. Center or Centre (C) is a position in gridiron football. The center is the innermost lineman of the offensive line on a football team's offense. The center is also the player who passes (or " snaps") the ball between his legs to the quarterback at the start of each play. The importance of centers for a football team has increased, due to the re-emergence of 3–4 defenses.
