John de Avila Mangefel (May 10, 1932 – April 11, 2007) was a Micronesian politician who played an important role during the first days of Micronesian independence and in the Trust Territory period that preceded them. Mangefel was the first college graduate from Yap, with a major in English literature from the University of Hawaii. He was elected to the Senate of Micronesian Congress from the Yap district. Petrus Tun
Petrus Tun (18 March 1935 – 23 March 1999) was a Micronesian politician, who played an important role during the first days of Micronesian independence and in the Trust Territory times that preceded them. Tun was elected to the Senate of Micronesian Congress from Yap district. He was instrumental in negotiating the first Compact of Free Association between the FSM and the United States and later served as the first Vice President of the Federated States of Micronesia during the first term of President Tosiwo Nakayama (1979–1983). After concluding his tenure as the nation's first vice-president, he served as special advisor to Yap's first Governor, John Mangefel, until he himself was voted as Yap's 2nd Governor of Yap. In addition, he held other high positions in both government and private industries. The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) was a United Nations trust territory in Micronesia administered by the United States from 1947 to 1994. The Imperial Japanese South Seas Mandate had been seized by the U.S. during the Pacific War, as Japan had administered the territory since the League of Nations gave Japan a mandate over the area from Imperial Germany after World War I. However, in the 1930s, Japan left the League of Nations and invaded additional lands. The Congress of Micronesia was a bicameral legislature in Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1964 to 1979. History The Congress was established on 28 September 1964, when the US Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall issued order no. 2882. It replaced the previous Council of Micronesia, which had been based outside the Trust Territory in Guam. The first elections were held in January 1965.
