John MacKay MacLennan
John MacKay MacLennan (1885–1977) was a Scottish minister, who served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland (since 1900), Free Church of Scotland in 1938. Life He graduated with an MA from the University of Edinburgh in 1915. From 1915 to 1923 he was minister of the Free Church in Glenurquhart then minister of Lairg Free Church from 1923 to 1965. He died in Inverness on 25 August 1977, aged 92, and is buried in the churchyard at Kirkton of Lochalsh, a hamlet near Balmacara. Moderator Of The General Assembly
The moderator of the General Assembly is the Chair (official), chairperson of a General Assembly (presbyterian church), General Assembly, the highest court of a Presbyterian or Calvinism, Reformed church. Kirk sessions and presbytery (church polity), presbyteries may also style the chairperson as moderator. The Oxford Dictionary states that a Moderator may be a "Presbyterian minister presiding over an ecclesiastical body". Presbyterian churches are ordered by a presbyterian polity, including a hierarchy of councils or courts of elders, from the local church (kirk) Session through presbyteries (and perhaps synods) to a General Assembly. The moderator presides over the meeting of the court, much as a convener presides over the meeting of a church committee. The Free Church of Scotland (; ) is a Conservative evangelicalism in the United Kingdom, conservative evangelical Calvinist denomination in Scotland. It is the continuation of the original Free Church of Scotland (1843–1900), Free Church of Scotland that remained outside the union with the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland in 1900, and remains a distinct Presbyterian denomination in Scotland. Lairg Free Church - Geograph
Lairg (, meaning "the shank/shin") is a village and parish in Sutherland, Scotland. It has a population of 891 and is at the south-eastern end of Loch Shin. Lairg is unusual in the northern Highlands in being a large settlement that is not on the coast. One of the reasons that Lairg is slightly bigger than other non-coastal Highland villages is its central location within the county of Sutherland. Having four roads which meet in the village, it used to be known as "The Crossroads of the North". In the 19th century, it was provided with a railway station (at ), on what is now the Far North Line. This development means that the north-west of Sutherland is now easier to reach. Balmacara
Balmacara () is a scattered village on the north shore of Loch Alsh near Kyle of Lochalsh, Ross-shire, Highland and is in the Scottish council area of the Highland, Scotland. In 1946, Lady Hamilton, bequeathed the Balmacara crofting estate to the people of Scotland, by donating it to the National Trust for Scotland. In 1954 the nearby Lochalsh House was conveyed to the Trust. The Balmacara Estate Visitor Centre is located in the centre of Balmacara. The Shinty club, Kinlochshiel play in the hamlet. The community of Balmacara lies on the edge of Balmacara Bay.
