John M. Belk
John Montgomery Belk (March 29, 1920 – August 17, 2007) was an American businessman. He was head of the Belk, Inc. department store chain and member of the Democratic Party, he served as the mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina for four terms (1969–1977). He was the son of William Henry Belk, who founded the first Belk store in Monroe, North Carolina, in 1888. Background He was the longest-serving mayor of the city of Charlotte until Pat McCrory was elected to a fifth term. McCrory eventually left office in 2009, after his record seventh term. When Belk was reelected for the fourth time, he tied his immediate predecessor, Stan Brookshire, for the most terms as mayor (Brookshire was the mayor from 1961 to 1969), but a change in state law extended Belk's term six months longer than Brookshire's. Claudia Belk
Claudia Belk (born Claudia Erwin Watkins; July 10, 1937 – February 8, 2017) was an American judge, lawyer, and philanthropist. She was a prominent woman in North Carolina law and the wife of John M. Belk, a four-term mayor of Charlotte. Early life and education Claudia Erwin Watkins was born in Durham, North Carolina on July 10, 1937, the daughter of Warren Byers Watkins, a tobacco wholesaler. She earned her undergraduate degree from Hollins College, now Hollins University, studying in Paris, and was one of two women to graduate from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1963. Career After graduating from law school, Belk opened her law practice. In 1968, she served as the assistant clerk for the Superior Court of Mecklenburg County. Stan Brookshire
Stanford Raynold Brookshire (July 22, 1905 – October 10, 1990) was a mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina. Brookshire served as mayor from 1961 to 1969. He was the longest-serving mayor until 1975, when his immediate successor, John M. Belk, tied him by winning his fourth re-election, though Belk's fourth term would be extended another six months thanks to a change in state law. A native of Troutman, North Carolina, Brookshire graduated from Duke University and came to Charlotte as a newspaper reporter. Pat McCrory
Patrick Lloyd McCrory (born October 17, 1956) is an American politician and businessman who served as the 74th governor of North Carolina from 2013 to 2017. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the 53rd mayor of Charlotte from 1995 to 2009. To date, he is North Carolina's most recent Republican governor. While serving as mayor of Charlotte, McCrory served on the U.S. Homeland Security Advisory Council from 2002 to 2006 under President George W. Bush.
