John Burns
John Elliot Burns (20 October 1858 – 24 January 1943) was an English trade unionist and politician, particularly associated with London politics and Battersea. He was a socialist and then a Liberal Member of Parliament and Minister. He was anti-alcohol and a keen sportsman. When the Liberal cabinet made a decision for war on 2 August 1914, he resigned and played no further role in politics. After retiring from politics, he developed an expertise in London history and coined the phrase "The Thames is liquid history". Early life Burns was born in London in 1858, the son of Alexander Burns, a Scottish fitter, growing up with his railwayman father in a house at 80 Grant Road, Battersea on what is now the Winstanley and York Road Estates. He attended a national school in Battersea until he was ten years old. John Burns, 1st Baron Inverclyde, (24 June 1829 – 12 February 1901) was a Scottish ship owner. Biography Born in Glasgow he was the son of Sir George Burns, 1st Baronet, a founder of the shipping company G & J Burns and a partner in the Cunard Steamship Co. and his wife, Jane Cleland. After school, he attended Glasgow University and took the general arts degree before joining the family firm about 1850. He married Emily (d. 1901), daughter of George Clerk Arbuthnot, in 1860, with whom he had two sons and three daughters. As a young man he had been in the Crimea at the fall of Sevastopol in 1855; he had subsequently been an advocate of good coastal defences and was the first to suggest to the government the use of merchant vessels for war purposes. The Barony Hall, (formerly the Barony Church), is a deconsecrated church building located on Castle Street in the Townhead area of Glasgow, Scotland, near Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the city's oldest surviving house, Provand's Lordship. It is built in the red sandstone Victorian neo-Gothic-style. The original or Old Barony Church was built as a part of the Barony Parish in Glasgow by architect, James Adams. It opened in 1799 and served ceremonial and other congregational purposes. The replacement for the old building was designed by J. J. Burnet & J. A. Campbell and raised in 1889, and incorporated architectural artifacts from the old church and a number of other relics. The New Barony Church was acquired by the University of Strathclyde in 1986. John Burns (1769–1785) was the youngest brother of the poet Robert Burns and the last son born to William Burness and Agnes Broun. John was born at Mount Oliphant Farm on the Doonholm Estate near Alloway on the 12 July 1769. He was christened circa 21 July 1769 by Rev. Rev William Dalrymple. John Campbell Burns (28 January 1880 – 11 June 1941) was a New Zealand teacher, sportsman and politician. Biography Burns was born in 1880 at Lawrence. His family moved to the Hutt Valley when his father got a job at the ''Hutt and Petone Chronicle'' newspaper. Burns played representative rugby union as an inside back for Wellington in the late-1800s. He was also a representative player in cricket, as wicketkeeper. He played in two first-class matches for Wellington in 1914/15. Burns graduated with a Master of Arts degree with honours at Victoria University College. In August 1896 he began a career with the Wellington Education Board in 1896 as well as being a junior teacher in Petone.
