John Hiestand (actor)
John "Bud" Hallam Hiestand, also known as Bud Hallam (January 16, 1907 – February 5, 1987) was an American actor and announcer. He began his career acting on radio in the early 1930s and soon also began work as an announcer in shows and commercials. During World War II, he worked for the U.S. Office of War Information, becoming chief of theater operations in the southwest Pacific. After the war, he continued to appear as a radio announcer, but also acted in films and TV series from the 1930s to the 1980s, sometimes in the roles of narrator or radio or TV announcer. Early life Hiestand was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1907. He graduated from Stanford University with a BA in political science in 1930. Career Hiestand started his career in radio in 1933, appearing first on station KHJ as an actor in a program called ''Catherine the Great'', and soon became an announcer with station KFI. The Great Gildersleeve
''The Great Gildersleeve'' was a radio situation comedy broadcast in the United States from August 31, 1941 to 1958. Initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, it was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. The series was built around Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a regular character from the radio situation comedy '' Fibber McGee and Molly''. The character was introduced in the October 3, 1939, episode (number 216) of that series. Actor Harold Peary had played a similarly named character, Dr. Gildersleeve, on earlier episodes. ''The Great Gildersleeve'' enjoyed its greatest popularity in the 1940s. Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in four feature films released at the height of the show's popularity. ''Temperatures Rising'' is an American television sitcom that aired on the American Broadcasting Company, ABC network from September 12, 1972 to August 29, 1974. During its 46-episode run, it was presented in three different formats and cast line-ups. ''The Public Defender'' is an American legal drama television series that was broadcast on CBS from March 11, 1954, to June 23, 1955. Premise Reed Hadley had the title role of public defender Bart Matthews. Each episode opened with him in a courtroom setting explaining the role of a public defender and the increase in the number of public defenders from the first one (created in January 1913). In each episode Matthews sought to show that his client was not guilty or to at least obtain a shorter sentence if the person was guilty. He sometimes had to investigate to learn more facts about the client's situation. Hadley portrayed Matthews as "such a character as butter will not melt in his mouth.
