John Henry Knight (inventor)
John Henry Knight (21 January 1847 – 22 September 1917), from Farnham, was a wealthy engineer, landowner and inventor. With the help of the engineer George Parfitt he built one of Britain's first petrol-powered motor vehicles, Frederick Bremer of Walthamstow having built the first in 1892. On 17 October 1895, with his assistant James Pullinger, they drove through Farnham, Surrey, whereupon he was prosecuted for using a locomotive with neither a licence nor a man walking in front with a red flag. This is sometimes misreported as the first person to be convicted of speeding in the UK, but that sobriquet subsequently fell to Walter Arnold of East Peckham, Kent, in January 1896. Farnham is a market town and civil parish in Surrey, England, around southwest of London. It is in the Borough of Waverley, close to the administrative counties of England, county border with Hampshire. The town is on the north branch of the River Wey, a tributary of the River Thames, Thames, and is at the western end of the North Downs. The civil parish, which includes the villages of Badshot Lea, Hale, Surrey, Hale and Wrecclesham, covers and had a population of 39,488 in 2011. Weybourne is a small village in Surrey, England. It lies on the outskirts of Farnham, Surrey and borders Aldershot in Hampshire. Geography Weybourne lies to the northeast of Farnham, bordering the villages of Hale, Heath End and Badshot Lea as well as the town of Aldershot to the north. The village centres around the crossroads of Weybourne Road (the B3007) and Upper and Lower Weybourne Lane. Its northern extent is demarcated by the Blackwater River, the ancient border of Surrey and Hampshire. The Crystal Palace was a cast iron and plate glass structure, originally built in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Locomotives on Highways Act 1896 ( 59 & 60 Vict. c. 36) removed the strict rules and UK speed limits that were included in the earlier Locomotive Acts which had greatly restricted the adoption of motorised vehicles in the United Kingdom.
