John Harry Robertson
John Harry Robertson FRSC, FInstP (1923 - 15 January 2003) was a British crystallographer whose work was important in the development of crystallographic techniques. Early life John Robertson was born and brought up in China, to parents who were Christian missionaries. He attended the University of Edinburgh where he studied Chemistry, and graduated in 1944. During his time there, Robertson was Class Medallist in Chemistry for three consecutive years. Career After his graduation, Robertson worked for three years at the Explosives Division of ICI Nobel in Ayrshire. Following this, he returned to the University of Edinburgh to work on a PhD on the X-ray structure of strychnine hydrobromide. To assist with this, he received a Senior Scholarship from the Carnegie Trust. His PhD adviser was Arnold Beevers, and the pair remained friends throughout their lives. Dorothy Hodgkin
Dorothy Mary Crowfoot Hodgkin (née Crowfoot; 12 May 1910 – 29 July 1994) was a Nobel Prize-winning British chemist who advanced the technique of X-ray crystallography to determine the structure of biomolecules, which became essential for structural biology. Among her most influential discoveries are the confirmation of the structure of penicillin as previously surmised by Edward Abraham and Ernst Boris Chain; and the structure of vitamin B12, for which in 1964 she became the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Hodgkin also elucidated the structure of insulin in 1969 after 35 years of work. Hodgkin used the name "Dorothy Crowfoot" until twelve years after marrying Thomas Lionel Hodgkin, when she began using "Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin". John Desmond Bernal
John Desmond Bernal (; 10 May 1901 – 15 September 1971) was an Irish scientist who pioneered the use of X-ray crystallography in molecular biology. He published extensively on the history of science. In addition, Bernal wrote popular books on science and society. He was a communist activist and a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). Education and early life His family was Irish, of mixed Spanish, Portuguese and Italian Sephardic origin on his father's side (his grandfather Jacob Genese, properly Ginesi, had adopted the family name Bernal of his paternal grandmother around 1837). The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland is a charitable trust established by Andrew Carnegie in 1901 for the benefit of the universities of Scotland, their students and their staff. The incorporation of the Trust was by royal charter in August 1902, later replaced in July 1978. The endowment of the Trust on establishment was $10 million (an unprecedented gift, amounting to around 200-times the annual governmental funding of the four Scottish universities at the time). In 2004-5, the assets of the Trust amounted to £58million, which enabled awards of £1,667,540 to be made.
