Progressive Rock
Progressive rock (shortened as prog rock or simply prog) is a broad genre of rock music that primarily developed in the United Kingdom through the mid- to late 1960s, peaking in the early-to-mid-1970s. Initially termed " progressive pop", the style emerged from psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop or rock traditions in favour of instrumental and compositional techniques more commonly associated with jazz, folk, or classical music, while retaining the instrumentation typical of rock music. Additional elements contributed to its " progressive" label: lyrics were more poetic, technology was harnessed for new sounds, music approached the condition of " art", and the studio, rather than the stage, became the focus of musical activity, which often involved creating music for listening rather than dancing. Progressive rock includes a fusion of styles, approaches and genres, and tends to be diverse and eclectic. Progressive rock is often associated with long solos, exte ... ReGenesis (band)
Genesis were an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, in Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The band's longest-lasting and most commercially successful line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. In the 1970s, during which the band also included singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett, Genesis were among the pioneers of progressive rock. Banks and Rutherford have been the only constant members throughout the band's history. The band were formed by Charterhouse pupils Banks, Rutherford, Gabriel, guitarist Anthony Phillips and drummer Chris Stewart. Their name was provided by former Charterhouse pupil and pop impresario Jonathan King, who arranged for them to record several singles and their debut album ''From Genesis to Revelation'' in 1969. After splitting from King, the band began touring, signed with Charisma Records and shifted to progressive rock with their succeeding album ''Trespass'' (19 ... Genesis Revisited
''Genesis Revisited'', called ''Watcher of the Skies: Genesis Revisited'' in the US, is the 12th studio album by Steve Hackett, paying tribute to his former band, Genesis. It mainly features songs originally released by Genesis during Hackett's tenure with the group (1971–77). The previously unreleased song "Déjà Vu" was started by Peter Gabriel in 1973 during the ''Selling England by the Pound'' sessions but not finished and Hackett completed the song for this album. There are also two new songs, "Valley of the Kings" and "Waiting Room Only"; the latter is named after and loosely inspired by "The Waiting Room", an instrumental from the 1974 Genesis album ''The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway''. The original Japanese and Argentinian versions of the album have a slightly different track listing and sequence, dropping "Los Endos" (also featured as a bonus track on the Japanese version of ''The Tokyo Tapes'') and containing one extra song called "Riding the Colossus" (also featured as ... Bay Of Kings
''Bay of Kings'' is the seventh studio album from English guitarist Steve Hackett, released in October 1983 on Lamborghini Records. His first album consisting entirely of instrumental classical guitar music, Hackett's former record company Charisma Records refused to release it over concerns about its commercial viability. Hackett left the label and released ''Bay of Kings'' through independent record company Lamborghini Records, started by Patric Mimran who owned the said car company at that time. It was later reissued by Hackett's own label, Camino Records. The album cover originally used a nude painting by his wife at the time, Kim Poor, but at her insistence it was replaced for the Camino reissue by a new painting of Hackett. (The original Japanese issue of the album replaced the nude cover with one that featured a drawing of a guitar.) Cured (album)
''Cured'' is the fifth solo album from Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. The cover photo was taken by Kim Poor. In 2007, ''Cured'' was remastered and re-released on Virgin Records. The new edition features updated liner notes and three bonus tracks. Background Prior to recording ''Cured'', Hackett disbanded the group with which he recorded '' Spectral Mornings'' and '' Defector''. Only Hackett's brother, John, and keyboardist Nick Magnus remained from that band. That led him after the Defector tour to be exhausted, and recuperated in Brazil where he spent three months working on new songs. The album is much more pop-oriented than Hackett's previous work, although there are distinct elements of progressive rock. The album is largely a collaboration between Hackett and Magnus. All drum parts were provided by a drum machine due to a limited budget, programmed by Magnus, and Hackett performed all the vocals, making this the first album for him to do so. It was also the firs ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
