John Gimson
John Gimson (born 11 March 1983) is an Olympic Silver Medallist and two time World champion in sailings Mixed multihull Olympic discipline. He lives in Congleton. In 2020 he became world champion in the Nacra 17 World Championship with partner Anna Burnet. They were selected for the British Olympic team and gained silver medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics. A veteran by the standards of many, John Gimson has forged a career in various formats of sailing and followed up success in the lead-up to Tokyo alongside Anna Burnet with silver in the Nacra 17 class at the 2020 Games. The duo won the 2020 Nacra 17 World Championship plus silver medals at the 2019 European Championships, World Cup Final and the Olympic test event. Andrew Simpson (sailor)
Andrew James Bart Simpson (17 December 1976 – 9 May 2013), was an English sailor who won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, as crew for skipper Iain Percy in the Star class representing Great Britain. Simpson died in the capsize of the catamaran he was crewing on 9 May 2013, while training for the America's Cup in San Francisco Bay. Career Simpson started his competitive sailing career in the Laser class, before switching to the heavier Finn class. He claimed the bronze medal at the 2003 ISAF Sailing World Championships in Cadiz in the Finn class; his training partner Ben Ainslie took the gold, with Great Britain topping the medal table. He sailed with +39 Challenge in the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup. World Sailing (WS) is the world governing body for the sport of sailing recognized by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). History The creation of the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU) began in 1904, when Major Brooke Heckstall-Smith AINA, then Secretary of the Yacht Racing Association (now the Royal Yachting Association) wrote to the Yacht Club de France, pointing out the desirability of holding a conference for the purpose of devising an International Rule of Measurement for Racing Yachts acceptable to all European countries. Tornado (sailboat)
The Tornado is a double handed multihull class recognised as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation. It was used for the Catamaran discipline at the Olympic Games from 1976 to 2008. Design The boat was designed in 1967 by Rodney March from the Isle of Sheppey, England. At the IYRU Olympic Catamaran Trials for international status, where it defeated other catamarans. To increase its performance even further, the Tornado was modified in 2001, with a new sail plan which included a spinnaker and spinnaker boom, as well as an increased sail area of the existing sails. An additional trapeze was also added, and the jib was made self tacking. The Tornado is among the fastest double handed catamarans, with an ISAF Small Catamaran Handicap Rating System rating of 0.934 and a D-PN of 59.0.
