John Gilbert (actor)
John Gilbert (born John Cecil Pringle; July 10, 1897 – January 9, 1936) was an American actor, screenwriter and director. He rose to fame during the silent era and became a popular leading man known as "The Great Lover". His breakthrough came in 1925 with his starring roles in ''The Merry Widow'' and '' The Big Parade''. At the height of his career, Gilbert rivaled Rudolph Valentino as a box office draw. Gilbert's career declined precipitously when silent pictures gave way to talkies. Though Gilbert was often cited as one of the high-profile examples of an actor who was unsuccessful in making the transition to sound films, his decline as a star had far more to do with studio politics and money than with the sound of his screen voice, which was rich and distinctive. John Gilbert (naturalist)
John Gilbert (c. 1812 – 28 June 1845) was an English natural history, naturalist and exploration, explorer. Gilbert is often cited in the earliest descriptions of many Australian animals, many of which were unrecorded in European literature, and some of these are named for him by those authors. Gilbert was sent to the newly founded Swan River Colony and made collections and notes on the unique birds and mammals of the surrounding region. He later joined expeditions to remote parts the country, continuing to make records and collections until he was killed during a violent altercation at Mitchell River (Queensland) on the Cape York Peninsula. John Gilbert (bushranger)
Johnny Gilbert (c. 1842-1865) was an Australian bushranger who was shot dead by the police at the age of 23 near Binalong, New South Wales on 13 May 1865. Gilbert was a member of Ben Hall (bushranger), Ben Hall's gang. Hall and Gilbert were both shot by police within a week of each other. Hall was shot dead on 5 May 1865 near Forbes, New South Wales, Forbes. Hall wanted to stop bushranging & decided to go it alone. John Gilbert (1724–1795) was land agent and engineer to the Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, third Duke of Bridgewater and is credited with the idea that led to the building of the Bridgewater Canal. John Gilbert was born in Staffordshire. When he was aged 12–13 he was apprenticed to Matthew Boulton, a manufacturer of small metal objects and the father of Matthew Boulton, the engineer. John Dudley Harwood Gilbert (8 October 1910 – 24 June 1992) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1930 and 1936. Gilbert was born at Chellaston Manor, Derbyshire and was educated at Repton School. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1930 season in June against Somerset but made little impression. He played three more games in the 1930 season, and five in the 1931 season. He then played one game in the 1932 season and one in the 1936 season. Gilbert was a right-hand batsman and played 11 innings in 11 first-class matches with a top score of 25 and an average of 9.63.
