Johannes De Garlandia (philologist)
Johannes de Garlandia or John of Garland was a medieval grammarian and university teacher. His dates of birth and death are unknown, but he probably lived from about 1190 to about 1270. Life John of Garland was born in England, and studied at Oxford and then at the medieval University of Paris, where he was teaching by 1220. He lived and taught on the Left Bank at the ''Clos de Garlande'', after which Rue Galande is named. This is the origin of the name by which he is usually known. The main facts of his life are stated in his long poem '' De triumphis ecclesiae'' ("On the triumphs of the Church"). In 1229, he was one of the first Masters of the new University of Toulouse. His poem ''Epithalamium Beatae Mariae Virginis'' was presented in 1230 to the Papal legate Romanus de Sancto Angelo, one of the founders of the university. Johannes de Garlandia (Johannes Gallicus) ( c. 1270 – 1320) was a French music theorist of the late ''ars antiqua'' period of medieval music. He is known for his work on the first treatise to explore the practice of musical notation of rhythm, '' De Mensurabili Musica''. Life and problems of identification Until the mid-1980s it was believed that Johannes de Garlandia lived in the first half of the 13th century and wrote two treatises, '' De Mensurabili Musica'' and ''De plana musica'', and thus was intimately connected with the composers of the Notre-Dame school, at least one of whom – Pérotin – may still have been alive in the earlier part of his career. Unfortunately the linking of his name with those two works only began after 1270, and it now seems likely that Garlandia was one Jehan de Garlandia, a keeper of a bookshop in Paris, records of whom appear on various official Parisian documents between 1296 and 1319. John Garland (general)
John Garland (November 15, 1793June 5, 1861) was an American general in the Regular Army who had a long and distinguished career spanning fifty years of service during the War of 1812, Seminole Wars, Mexican–American War, Utah War and very briefly into the American Civil War. Early life and career Garland was born in Virginia to Hudson Martin and Elizabeth Penn (''née'' Phillips) Garland. His mother was the grandniece of William Penn. One of his brothers was James Garland. He joined the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 and by 1813 was a first lieutenant. He served throughout the war in the 35th Infantry and was transferred to the 3rd Infantry at the war's close. He stayed in the army serving in the quartermaster's department. He fought under General William J. Worth in the Seminole Wars in northern and central Florida. John Garland (Australian Politician)
John Garland (17 September 1862 – 23 February 1921) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born at Fordyce, Banffshire to farmer Robert Garland and Isabella Whyte. He attended Fordyce Academy in Fordyce and graduated as a Master of Arts from the University of Aberdeen in 1882. In 1886, he received a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Edinburgh, and in 1887 migrated to Australia, where he was called to the bar on 30 November 1888. On 21 December 1896 he married Isobel Chisholm, with whom he had a daughter. A founding member of the Council of the Bar of New South Wales, he was also a procurator of the Presbyterian Church and a lecturer on ecclesiastical law at the University of Sydney. In 1898 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Free Trade member for Woollahra. He was defeated in 1901, but won a by-election for Tamworth in 1903.
