John Francis Morley
John Francis Morley (6 October 1942 – 7 July 1980) was an Irish Gaelic footballer and Garda Síochána. His championship career at senior level with the Mayo county team spanned thirteen seasons from 1961 until 1974. Morley is widely regarded as one of Mayo's greatest ever players. Born in Kiltimagh, County Mayo, Morley was educated locally and later attended St Jarlath's College in Tuam where he first played competitive football. Here he won back-to-back All-Ireland medals in 1960 and 1961. At club level Morley first played at juvenile and underage levels with Kiltimagh before later lining out with a variety of clubs. His greatest success was with the Ballaghaderreen club with whom he won a county senior championship medal in 1972. Morley made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he was selected for the Mayo minor team in 1960. Connacht Senior Football Championship
The Connacht Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition for the senior county teams of Connacht GAA. All of the counties of Connacht participate in the championship, as well as counties London and New York. The winning team receives the Nestor Cup. The Connacht Senior Football Championship is run on a knock-out basis in which once a team loses they are eliminated from the competition. A series of games are played during the summer months and the final is played in June or July. The winner progresses directly to the All-Ireland Super 8s, while losing teams progress to the All-Ireland Qualifiers (before 2001 the All-Ireland was a straight knock-out format meaning all losing teams were eliminated after a single defeat). Ballaghaderreen Gaelic Footballers
Ballaghaderreen () is a town in County Roscommon, Ireland. It was part of County Mayo prior to 1898. It is located just off the N5 National primary road. The population was 1,808 in the 2016 census. History As of 1837, the town was recorded as having 1147 inhabitants in about 200 houses and as "rising in importance" as a post-town, being on the (then) new mail coach road from Ballina to Longford. As of the mid-19th century, markets were held on Fridays, with seven fairs held throughout the year. A court-house, market house and an infantry barracks to accommodate 94 persons had all been established by that time. In 1860, Ballaghaderreen Cathedral was dedicated as the cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Achonry. In March 2017, Ballaghaderreen became an Emergency Reception and Orientation Centre (EROC) for hundreds of refugees from the Syrian Civil War. Murder Of Henry Byrne And John Morley
Henry Byrne and John Morley, two officers of the Garda Síochána, the police force of Ireland, were murdered on 7 July 1980 by alleged members of the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA). The officers' deaths provoked national outrage. Three men were apprehended, convicted, and sentenced to death for capital murder. Two of the sentences were later reduced to 40 years imprisonment while the third was overturned. Bank robbery On 7 July 1980, three armed and masked men raided the Bank of Ireland in Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon. The group held staff and customers at gunpoint before leaving with IR£35,000. The Gardaí (Irish police) arrived on the scene but were unarmed and were unable to stop the armed men from escaping in a blue Ford Cortina. 1969 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1969 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 83rd staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 4 May 1969 and ended on 28 September 1969. Down entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Cavan in the Ulster final. On 28 September 1969, Kerry won the championship following a 0-10 to 0-7 defeat of Offaly in the All-Ireland final. This was their 21st All-Ireland title, their first in seven championship seasons. 1967 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1967 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 81st staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter county, inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 23 April 1967 and ended on 24 September 1967. Galway GAA, Galway entered the championship as the 1966 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, defending champions, however, they were defeated by Mayo GAA, Mayo in the Connacht semi-final. Mayo Intermediate Football Championship
The Mayo Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier (17-32) Mayo GAA clubs. Ballyhaunis are the title holders (2022) defeating Kilmeena in the Final. Honours The winning club competes in the Connacht Intermediate Club Football Championship. They often do well there, with the likes of Westport (2016), Hollymount Carraroe (2015), Kiltane (2013) and Charlestown Sarsfields (2012) among the clubs from Mayo to win at least one Connacht Championship after winning the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship. Connacht colleges senior football "A" championship, is the top level Gaelic football competition for secondary schools in Connacht. They compete for the Aonghus Murphy Memorial Cup. The winners advance to the Hogan Cup, the All-Ireland colleges senior "A" football championship. St Colman's College, Claremorris beat St Gerald's College, Castlebar 0-15 to 1-11 in an all-Mayo final in McHale Park on 15 March to win the 2019 championship. The Irish National Liberation Army (INLA, ga, Arm Saoirse Náisiúnta na hÉireann) is an Irish republican socialist paramilitary group formed on 10 December 1974, during the 30-year period of conflict known as " the Troubles".
