John Fane, 7th Earl Of Westmorland
John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland (24 March 1685 – 26 August 1762), styled The Honourable John Fane from 1691 to 1733 and Lord Catherlough from 1733 to 1736, of Mereworth Castle in Kent, was a British Army officer and politician who sat in the British House of Commons, House of Commons in three separate stretches between 1708 and 1734. Origins He was the son of Vere Fane, 4th Earl of Westmorland by his wife Rachel Bence. He succeeded both his childless elder brothers, namely Vere Fane, 5th Earl of Westmorland and Thomas Fane, 6th Earl of Westmorland. Inheritance Since Fane outlived many of his siblings, including Vere Fane, 5th Earl of Westmorland and Thomas Fane, 6th Earl of Westmorland, and was the only heir male, he inherited most of their properties. John Fane, 9th Earl Of Westmorland
John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland (5 May 1728 – 25 April 1774), known as Lord Burghersh until 1771, was an English peer and Member of Parliament. Early life He was the eldest son of Thomas Fane, 8th Earl of Westmorland of Wormsley Park, Buckinghamshire, and Elizabeth Swymmer (the daughter of Bristol sugar merchant William Swymmer). His younger brother was Henry Fane, MP. His father was the second son of Henry Fane of Brympton d'Evercy and Anne Scrope (sister and co-heiress of John Scrope). In 1757 his father succeeded his uncle Francis to their father's Brympton estate and, in 1762, inherited the title of Earl of Westmoreland from John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland, his father's cousin. Fane was educated at Westminster School from 1739 to 1745. Career He succeeded his father as MP for Lyme Regis from 1762 (passing the seat on to his brother Henry in 1771). John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland, (1 June 175915 December 1841), styled Lord Burghersh between 1771 and 1774, was a British Tory politician of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, who served in most of the cabinets of the period, primarily as Lord Privy Seal ultimately spending 33 years in office. Background Westmorland was the son of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland, and Lady Augusta Bertie, daughter of Capt. Lord Montagu Bertie (the seventh child of Robert Bertie, 1st Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven). He succeeded in the earldom on the death of his father in 1774. Political career In 1789 Westmorland was appointed Joint Postmaster General by William Pitt the Younger and sworn into the Privy Council. John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland (3 February 178416 October 1859), styled Lord Burghersh until 1841, was a British soldier, politician, diplomat, composer and musician. Background Styled Lord Burghersh from birth, he was born at Sackville Street, Piccadilly, London, the son of John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland, by his wife Sarah Child, daughter and heiress of the wealthy banker Sir Robert Child, builder of Osterley Park. His sister was the social hostess Sarah Villiers, Countess of Jersey, and his uncle was William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale, a Tory magnate from northern England. He was educated at Cheam School and then at Harrow from 1797 to 1799. Burghersh was admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge on 28 January 1802 and received an M.A. in 1808. John Fane (1751–1824)
John Fane (6 January 17518 February 1824), of Wormsley near Watlington, Oxfordshire, was a British Tory politician who represented Oxfordshire in eight successive Parliaments. He was also a magistrate and president of the Oxfordshire Agricultural Society. Background Fane was the son of Henry Fane (a younger brother of Thomas Fane, 8th Earl of Westmorland). His mother was Charlotte, daughter of Richard Luther, of Miles near Ongar in Essex. Political career Fane was returned to Parliament for Oxfordshire in 1796, 1802, 1806, 1807, 1812, 1818, and 1820. He was created D.C.L. Oxford 28 June 1797. Appointed Major of the Oxfordshire Militia on 4 June 1803, but not so in 1807, and Lieutenant Colonel Commandant 2nd Oxfordshire (Local) Militia 24 April 1809. John Fane (1775–1850)
John Fane (9 July 1775 – 4 October 1850), of Wormsley nr. Watlington, Oxfordshire, was a British Tory politician. Background A member of the Fane family headed by the Earl of Westmorland, Fane was the son of John Fane, of Wormsley, Oxfordshire, and Lady Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Parker, 3rd Earl of Macclesfield. Political career Fane succeeded his father as Member of Parliament for Oxfordshire in 1824, a seat he held until 1831. He also served as High Sheriff of Oxfordshire in 1835. An anti-Catholic, he generally supported the Tory line. Family Fane married Elizabeth, daughter of William Lowndes-Stone-Norton, in 1801. They had several children, including his heir John Fane, Reverend Frederick Adrian Scrope Fane (1810–1894) and George Augustus Scrope Fane (1817–1860). He died in October 1850.
