John Evans (archaeologist)
Sir John Evans (17 November 1823 – 31 May 1908) was an England, English antiquarian, geologist and founder of prehistoric archaeology. Between 1884 and 1908 he was curator of Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, becoming a founding member of the British Academy in 1902 and professor of prehistoric archaeology at Oxford in 1909. The John Evans collection, housed at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, comprises more than 12,000 objects, including a large proportion of British Palaeolithic stone tools. Alfred John Evans (1 May 1889 – 18 September 1960) was an English amateur cricketer, soldier and aviator. As a cricketer, he played first-class cricket before the First World War as an all-rounder for Oxford University and Hampshire, and after the war for Kent County Cricket Club, whom he captained in 1927. Evans gained one Test cap in the 1921 Ashes series against Australia. In first-class cricket, he made 90 appearances, scoring nearly 3,500 runs and taking 110 wickets. In his military service, Evans partook in both the First and the Second World War's. Beginning in the Intelligence Corps during the First World War, he later joined the Royal Flying Corps as a reconnaissance pilot, which earned him the Military Cross (MC). After crash landing behind enemy lines on the Western Front, Evans was made a prisoner of war by Germany. John Edward Evans (April 1868 – 1942), also known as "Jammer", was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Bury, Burslem Port Vale and Stoke. Career Evans played for Newcastle Swifts before joining local league club Stoke in 1891. He had a decent debut season with Stoke, scoring six goals during the 1891–92 season. Evans became the first Stoke player to be sent off after receiving his marching orders in an away match at Everton on 12 November 1892. He recovered well from this setback and went on to score 10 league goals during the 1892–93 season, helping Stoke to achieve their highest league position to that point of 7th. He spent two more seasons at the Victoria Ground but failed to hold down a place in the starting eleven.
