John E. Gray
John Ellis Gray (March 3, 1907 – March 20, 2002) was an educational administrator, businessman and university president at Lamar University. In 1972, Gray, along with Otho Plummer, H. C. Galloway, and Dr. Charles P. Turco founded the Lamar University Foundation to fund raise, manage, and administer private gifts in support of Lamar University programs. In 1973 Gray was inducted into the Cardinal hall of honor. Early life Gray was born on March 3, 1907, in Buckeye, Texas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Gray. He moved to Beaumont where he graduated from South Park High School in 1923. From 1926 to 1932 Gray coached the South Park High School Greenies; it was during his tenure that the phrase "Greenie Fight Never Dies" was first used. In 1930 John Gray married Mary M. Hahn. President Of Lamar University
Lamar University is a state university in Beaumont, Texas. Lamar is a Carnegie Doctoral Research University, one of only 27 so designated universities in the United States. Founding and Establishment The idea for a public junior college in Beaumont's South Park was formed by Louis R. Pietzsch. Pietzsch had become intensely interested in the junior college movement while enrolled in summer school at the University of Chicago in 1918, and by 1921, was convinced that South Park should have a junior college. Lamar University started on September 17, 1923 as South Park Junior College, operating on the unused third floor of the new South Park High School, with Pietzsch acting as the first president of the college. Approximately 125 students enrolled in 1923 and were taught by 14 teachers. Eight students who had transfer credits graduated in 1924. William Clements
William Perry Clements Jr. (April 13, 1917 – May 29, 2011) was an American businessman and Republican Party politician who served two non-consecutive terms as the governor of Texas between 1979 and 1991. His terms bookended the sole term served by Mark Wells White, a Democrat who defeated Clements in the 1982 election only to lose his campaign for re-election in 1986. When Clements was first sworn in during 1979, he became the first Republican to have served as governor of Texas since Reconstruction. When Clements left office for good at the end of his second term in 1991, his eight years in office were the most served by any Texas governor until Rick Perry surpassed his total in 2009.
