John Woods Duke
John Woods Duke (July 30, 1899 β October 26, 1984) was an American composer and pianist born in Cumberland, Maryland. He is best known for his large output of art songs. Biography John Woods Duke was the oldest child in a large musical family. After teaching him to read music at an early age and starting him on piano lessons at age 11, Duke's mother (a talented singer herself) enrolled him in the Cumberland, MD Allegheny Academy. By age 16 he had won a three-year scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. While at Peabody, Duke studied composition and theory under Gustav Strube and piano with Harold Randolph (whose own tutors had included Hans von BΓΌlow, Clara Schumann, and Franz Liszt). He graduated in 1918, and, in the midst of wartime, volunteered his services to the Student Army Training Corps at Columbia University. Duke stayed in New York City after the war. John Heath (later John Duke)
John Heath (later John Duke) (c.1717β1775), of Gittisham, near Honiton, Devon, was an English politician. He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of Great Britain for Honiton 1747β1754 and 1761β1768. He changed his surname from Heath to Duke by a 1750 Act of Parliament, as a condition of the will of his uncle Richard Duke (Richard VII Duke), at which point he inherited the Manor of Otterton in Devon. He died on 3 November 1775 without any children, and the Duke estates passed to Robert Duke of Otterton Otterton is a village and civil parish in East Devon, England. The parish lies on the English Channel and is surrounded clockwise from the south by the parishes of East Budleigh, Bicton, Colaton Raleigh, Newton Poppleford and Harpford and Sidmou ..., another nephew of Richard Duke. Sir John Duke, 2nd Baronet
Sir John Duke, 2nd Baronet (3 January 1632 - July 1705 ) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1679 and 1698. Duke was the son of Sir Edward Duke, 1st Baronet of Benhall, Suffolk and his wife Ellenor Panton, daughter of John Panton of Westminster and of Brunslip, Denbighshire. His father had been MP for Orford. He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and travelled abroad in 1657. He was commissioner for assessment for Suffolk from 1661 to 1680 and became a Deputy Lieutenant and J.P. for Suffolk in 1671. He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1673. He was commissioner for recusants in 1675 and mayor of Orford from 1677 to 1678. In February 1679, Duke was elected Member of Parliament for Orford. He held the seat until 1685. John Duke (police Officer)
John Duke (20 October 1926 β 26 February 1989) was a senior British police officer who rose through the ranks to be Chief Constable of Hampshire Constabulary. Life He was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne in the north-east of England and worked in the coal mines before going to London in 1947 to join the City of London Police. After 22 years with that force he transferred to Essex Constabulary as an Assistant Chief Constable, being promoted to Deputy Chief Constable there in 1972. On 1 September 1977 he was appointed Chief Constable of Hampshire, where he oversaw the introduction of many changes, not least the introduction of the Air Support Unit and modern communication and training centres. He retired from the force in 1988.
