John Doherty (boxer)
John Doherty (born 12 July 1962) is a British former boxer who was British super featherweight champion for three periods between 1986 and 1992. Career Born in Bradford, Doherty made his professional debut in May 1982, losing by first round stoppage to Taffy Mills. After being unbeaten in his next 10 fights, he suffered a second defeat in September 1983 when he was beaten on points by Anthony Brown. Two months later he lost again (to Stuart Carmichael) but then put together an 11-fight unbeaten run which included a win over Steve Pollard to take the BBBofC Central Area featherweight title. In 1986 the BBBofC introduced a British title at super featherweight, and John Doherty (who was also sometimes known as Pat Doherty) met Pat Doherty for the vacant title in January, John a late substitute for Najib Daho; The fight went the distance, with John Doherty getting the verdict by a single point to become British champion. Michael Morris (born 18 December 1968), who fought under the name Michael Armstrong, is a British former boxer, who was British super featherweight champion in 1992. Career Born in Moston, Cheshire and based in Stoke-on-Trent, Armstrong moved into boxing from kickboxing and made his professional debut in January 1988, knocking John Hales out in the first round. Beaten only twice in his first 15 fights, in September 1990 he challenged for Modesty Napunyi's Commonwealth featherweight title, losing in a ninth round knockout. He won his next three fights, including a final eliminator against Darren Elsdon, setting up a challenge for John Doherty's British super featherweight title in April 1992 at the G-Mex Centre in Manchester. Sean Murphy (born 1 December 1964) is an English boxing trainer and former professional fighter. Career Born in St Albans, Murphy boxed as a professional between 1986 and 1994. Murphy represented England and won a gold medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. After winning the prestigious ABA bantamweight title in 1985 and 1986, boxing for St. Albans ABC, he turned professional. Sean Murphy went on to win British and Commonwealth Featherweight titles. He defended his British Featherweight title for 2 fights losing it to Gary De Roux on Tuesday 5 March 1991. Sean Murphy retained the British title on Sunday 27 June 1993 against Alan McKay and was given the chance to fight for the WBO Featherweight World Title against Steve Robinson in Wales but he was Knocked Out in Round 9.
