John Devine (9 July 1933 - May 2017) was an English footballer who played as a winger and made a professional appearance with Chester. Devine played for Rhyl until joining Chester in 1955, with goalkeeper John Griffiths making the same move. But whereas Griffiths was to make more than 50 league appearances for the club, Devine was to be restricted to a solitary first team outing. John Hunter Devine (1 December 1935 – 6 December 2020), also known as Hunter Devine, was a Scottish amateur footballer who played as an inside forward for Queen's Park between 1953 and 1961. Devine represented Great Britain at the 1960 Summer Olympics and also played in non-League football. Personal life In the early 1960s, Devine moved to London to work as an actuary for Scottish Amicable Building Society. Devine died on 6 December 2020, at the age of 85. John Herbert Devine (22 June 1940 – 29 January 2023) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s, and Tasmanian Football League (TFL) side North Hobart between 1967 and 1974. Australian rules football career A defender, Devine was recruited to as a 20-year-old from Colac, and he made his debut for Geelong against Footscray in round 1 of the 1960 VFL season. Devine would quickly become an integral part of a rising Geelong team. On 6 July 1963, he was a member of the Geelong team that were comprehensively and unexpectedly beaten by Fitzroy, 9.13 (67) to 3.13 (31) in the 1963 Miracle Match. Given the nickname "Colac" by his teammates, in 1963 Devine was a member of Geelong's premiership team playing off the half-back flank where he was named amongst the best for Geelong. John Devine is a Gaelic football goalkeeper for the Errigal Ciarán club and the Tyrone county team. For his county, Devine was in competition for the position with Pascal McConnell, Johnny Curran and Niall Morgan, but all three players maintained a good relationship, with McConnell being his rival for the best part of 10 years. The 1836 Grand Liverpool Steeplechase was the first of three unofficial annual precursors of a steeplechase which later became known as the Grand National. The steeplechase was held at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England on 29 February 1836 and attracted a field of ten runners. The winning horse was The Duke, ridden by Captain Martin Becher in the violet with white sleeves and cap colours of Mr Sirdefield, the landlord of the ''George Inn'' in Great Crosby and was trained privately. The race was won in a time of 15 minutes 12 seconds, over twice the present course record. The race was a selling race and its status as an official Grand National was revoked some time between 1862 and 1873. The 1837 Grand Liverpool Steeplechase was the second of three unofficial annual precursors of a Handicap Steeple-chase, later to become known as the Grand National Steeplechase horse race which took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool on 4 March 1837 and attracted a field of four runners. This race did not carry the prestige of the future Grand Nationals and its status as an official Grand National was revoked some time between 1862 and 1873.
