John Delany (luthier)
John William Delany ( ga, Seán Ó Dubhshláine; 1769 – 1838) was an Irish luthier and maker of violins and violas from Dublin. His instruments have become known for their unusual labels, often expressing his support for liberty and racial equality. Two of Delany's violins are preserved as part of a collection in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin. Early life Delany was born in Dublin in 1769 to Daniel Delany, a cabinetmaker, and Mary Byrne. On 20 November 1771, Delany was baptised John William Delany in the parish of St Catherine's, a Roman Catholic parish in Meath Street, Dublin. Delany's parents were married in the same church the year before on 29 October 1770. It is therefore possible that Delany was born thereafter, sometime in the Summer or Autumn of 1771. The Liberties (Irish: ''Na Saoirsí'' or occasionally ''Na Libirtí'') is an area in central Dublin, Ireland, located in the southwest of the inner city. Formed from various areas of special manorial jurisdiction, separate from the main city government, it is one of Dublin's most historic working class neighbourhoods. The area was traditionally associated with the River Poddle, market traders and local family-owned businesses, as well as the Guinness brewery, whiskey distilling, and, historically, the textiles industry and tenement housing. The rondo is an instrumental musical form introduced in the Classical period. Etymology The English word ''rondo'' comes from the Italian form of the French ''rondeau'', which means "a little round". Despite the common etymological root, rondo and rondeau as musical forms are essentially different. A march, as a musical genre, is a piece of music with a strong regular rhythm which in origin was expressly written for marching to and most frequently performed by a military band. Vincenzo Panormo
Vincenzo Trusiano Panormo (1734–1813) was an Italian luthier of Irish and English violins. Panormo is thought to have been born in Palermo, Sicily (Panormo is the Latin version of Palermo). He studied violin making in Naples with the Gagliano family of luthiers. From 1753 to 1789, Panormo worked in Paris as a violin craftsman. At the start of the French Revolution, he moved to Dublin, where he worked with Thomas Perry,Irish Times, William Galland Stuart, 21 September 1973 and then to London where he crafted instruments until his death in 1813. Panormo's violins are considered English with influences by Stradavarius and Amati. Historians note Panormo as one of the finest English violin makers. Richard Tobin (luthier)
Richard Tobin ( ga, Risteárd Tóibín; 1766 – December 1847) was an Irish luthier and maker of violins, violas, cellos and Kit violin, pochettes. Tobin's work was largely uncredited, often branded under the names of his employers and other shops that enlisted him for his sought-after workmanship. As a luthier, he has been described as "a genius". As well as being known for the quality of his instruments, Tobin is famous for the workmanship of his scrolls, of which it has been said "never did Antonio Stradivari cut better". Early life Tobin was born near Dublin around 1766. William Ringwood ( ga, Uilliam Ringwood; ) was an Irish luthier and professor from Dublin. Early life Very little is known about Ringwood's early life. Based on the year he began his apprenticeship as a violin maker, it is thought that he was born some time around 1769, probably near Dublin. It is also possible that he may have been born later in the year 1771, as he is recorded as still being an apprentice in deeds dated 1793. Career Apprenticeship and early career: 1783–1793 Ringwood began his career as a luthier in Dublin in the early 1780s. He was apprenticed to renowned Dublin maker Thomas Perry at 6 Anglesea Street between 1783 and 1790. Thomas Street () is a street in The Liberties in central Dublin, Ireland. History The street is named after the church of St. Thomas, founded in 1175 near St. Catherine's church. The founder was William FitzAldelm, deputy and kinsman of King Henry II. The church was dedicated to Thomas Beckett (St. Thomas the Martyr), who had recently been murdered in his cathedral at Canterbury by followers of the king.
