John Deere Model M
The John Deere Model M tractor was a two-cylinder row-crop tractor produced by John Deere from 1947 to 1952, with successor models produced until 1960. It was succeeded by the updated 40, 420 and 430 models, as well as the 320 and 330 models that occupied the market positions left vacant by the more powerful 400 series models. Description and production The "M" was first produced in 1947, and the model lasted until 1952. It was a general-purpose row-crop tractor, intended as a replacement for the John Deere Model H, H and the John Deere Model L, L models. As with most row-crop tractors, the spacing between the front wheels could be adjusted to suit row spacings. The model "M" was later offered with both traditionally spaced front wheels and also in the model "MT" which had a tricycle type configuration in which the front wheels were closely spaced, effectively acting as one single front wheel. John Deere Model H
The John Deere Model H tractor was a row-crop tractor produced by John Deere from 1939 to 1947. Description and production The H was introduced in 1939 as a much-scaled-down version of the John Deere Model G. It was a general-purpose row-crop tractor, intended for smaller farms. As with most row-crop tractors, the spacing between the rear wheels could be adjusted to suit row spacings. The front wheels were offered with wide and narrow wheel arrangements, as well as high-crop and single front wheel versions. The tractor was equipped with a two-cylinder side-by-side engine, of displacement. A cost-saving peculiarity of the H was that the engine output was through the camshaft, rather than through the crankshaft. A three-speed transmission was provided. The H was produced only for kerosene fuel. Production ended in 1947. John Deere Model L
The John Deere Model L tractor was a small one-plow row-crop tractor produced by John Deere from 1937 to 1946. Description and production The L was first produced in 1937. Unlike most John Deere tractors, it was designed in John Deere's Dubuque Wagon Works plant in Dubuque, Iowa, and did not resemble previous Deere products. It departed further from tradition by using a non-Deere engine, a Hercules two-cylinder engine mounted in line, rather than transversely, as had been traditional, mated to a three-speed Ford transmission, with the engine mounted far forward over the wide-set front wheels. This created a distinctive empty gap between the engine and operator. Late 1938 models were restyled in line with other Deere tractors, with Henry Dreyfuss cowlings and grilles. The three-point hitch (British English: three-point linkage) is a widely used type of hitch for attaching ploughs and other implements to an agricultural or industrial tractor. The three points resemble either a triangle, or the letter A. Three-point attachment is the simplest and the only statically determinate way of joining two bodies in engineering. A three-point hitch attaches the implement to the tractor so that the orientation of the implement is fixed with respect to the tractor and the arm position of the hitch. The Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory (NTTL) is a program operated by the University of Nebraska in accordance with Nebraska law to test the performance of agricultural equipment that is to be sold in the United States for compliance with OECD standards.
