John D. Calandra
John D. Calandra (August 8, 1928 – January 20, 1986) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was born on August 8, 1928. He attended St. Philip Neri Grammar School, Immaculate High School, and St. Bonaventure University. He graduated from St. John's Law School. He was an Assistant United States Attorney. He was Chairman of the Republican Party in the Bronx. He married Jo Ann Trentacosta, and they had two children. He ran for the New York State Senate in 1962 and 1964, but was defeated both times by Democrat Joseph E. Marine. In November 1965, after re-apportionment, he was elected, and then re-elected several times. He was a member of the State Senate from 1966 until his death in 1986, sitting in the 176th, 177th, 178th, 179th, 180th, 181st, 182nd, 183rd, 184th, 185th and 186th New York State Legislatures. The 186th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 9, 1985, to December 31, 1986, during the third and fourth years of Mario Cuomo's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1938 and the U.S. Supreme Court decision to follow the One man, one vote rule, re-apportioned in 1982 by the Legislature, 61 Senators and 150 assemblymen were elected in single-seat districts for two-year terms. Senate and Assembly districts consisted of approximately the same number of inhabitants, the area being apportioned contiguously without restrictions regarding county boundaries.
