John Cunningham Knowles
John Cunningham Knowles , MBE, ED (October 15, 1894 – August 31, 1977) was a political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Wilkie in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1938 to 1944 as a Liberal. He was born in Severn Bridge, Ontario, the son of Robert Knowles and Mary Elizabeth Cunningham, and educated in Ufford and at Northern Business College in Owen Sound. Knowles served overseas in France and Flanders during World War I. After the war, he came west and settled on a farm in Unity. Knowles was on the municipal council for Unity and served on the board of directors of the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association and of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities. In 1927, he married Inez Viola Mead. He also served in the Canadian Army during World War II. In 1946, Knowles was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his military service. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, often abbreviated as SARM, is an independent association that is responsible for representing the governments of the many rural municipalities in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It is an official Government of Saskatchewan sanctioned corporation. There are 296 rural municipalities represented by SARM in such areas as dealing with the provincial and federal governments. The members are arranged in divisions in order to elect SARM Directors. Board of Directors of Divisions SARM is governed by a board of directors. Unity is a town in the western part of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan with a population of 2573. Unity is located at the intersection of Highway 14 and Highway 21, and the intersection of the CNR and CPR main rail lines. The Efficiency Decoration, post-nominal letters TD for recipients serving in the Territorial Army of the United Kingdom or ED for those serving in the Auxiliary Military Forces, was instituted in 1930 for award to part-time officers after twenty years of service as an efficient and thoroughly capable officer. The decoration superseded the Volunteer Officers' Decoration, the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration and the Territorial Decoration.
