John Cook (filmmaker)
John Cook (1935 - 21 September 2001) was an Cinema of Austria, Austrian filmmaker. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Cook lived and worked most of his life in Europe and often referred to himself as "Vienna, Viennese by choice", having moved to Austria in the late 1960s after a career in commercial photography in Paris. Little-known in his native Canada, Cook is considered, despite his small filmography, an important figure in Cinema of Austria, Austrian cinema. Cook was the father of Canadian guitarist Jesse Cook. Cinema of Austria refers to the film industry based in Austria. Austria has had an active cinema industry since the early 20th century when it was the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and that has continued to the present day. Producer Sascha Kolowrat-Krakowsky, producer-director-writer Luise Kolm and the Austro-Hungarian directors Michael Curtiz and Alexander Korda were among the pioneers of early Austrian cinema. Several Austrian directors pursued careers in Weimar Germany and later in the United States, among them Fritz Lang, G. W. Pabst, Josef von Sternberg, Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann, and Otto Preminger. Between the two World Wars, directors like E. W. Emo and Henry Koster - the latter of whom had emigrated from Austria, provided examples of Austrian film comedies. Jesse Arnaud Cook is a Canadian guitarist. He is a Juno Award winner, ''Acoustic Guitar'' Player's Choice Award silver winner in the Flamenco Category, and a three-time winner of the Canadian Smooth Jazz award for Guitarist of the Year. He has recorded on the EMI, E1 Music and Narada labels and has sold over 1.5 million records worldwide.
