John Charles Brudenell-Bruce
John Charles Brudenell-Bruce, MBE, OStJ (6 March 1885 – 13 February 1960), was a diplomat in the British service and a politician who served during the years immediately after the reintroduction of democracy in the British Virgin Islands in 1950. Between 1916 and 1918, during the First World War, he was a Second Secretary in the British Diplomatic Service. He later moved to the British Virgin Islands in the 1930s on the advice of his doctors to seek a warmer climate. He purchased an estate of approximately 230 acres on Peter Island at Little Harbour and established a small tobacco plantation. Subsequently he was elected as a member of First Legislative Council following the reintroduction of democracy in 1950. Although many of Brudenell-Bruce's family had enjoyed long and successful political careers in the United Kingdom, he did not stand in the subsequent general election. Robert Thomas Brudenell-Bruce
Commodore Lord Robert Thomas Brudenell-Bruce (25 Jan 1845 – 15 Feb 1912) was a British Commodore of the Royal Navy. He was born the fourth son of Ernest Brudenell-Bruce, 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury. He gained the rank of Commodore in 1900 and inherited Deene Park in Northamptonshire on the death of his father in 1886. He married Emma Leigh in 1878 and had 4 sons and 3 daughters. Before inheriting Deene Park the family lived on Hayling Island, near Portsmouth. He died on 15 February 1912 at the age of 67. His eldest son and heir James Ernest was killed in the First World War in 1917. His second son, George Lionel Thomas, reverted his name back to Brudenell by Royal Licence and inherited Deene Park from his brother James Ernest. The Order of the Dannebrog ( da, Dannebrogordenen) is a Danish order of chivalry instituted in 1671 by Christian V. Until 1808, membership in the order was limited to fifty members of noble or royal rank, who formed a single class known as ''White Knights'' to distinguish them from the ''Blue Knights'' who were members of the Order of the Elephant. In 1808, the Order was reformed and divided into four classes. The ''Grand Commander'' class is reserved to persons of princely origin. It is awarded only to royalty with close family ties with the Danish Royal House. The statute of the Order was amended in 1951 by a Royal Ordinance so that both men and women could be members of the Order. Earl of Cardigan is a title in the Peerage of England, currently held by the Marquesses of Ailesbury, and used as a courtesy title by the heir apparent to that Marquessate, currently David Brudenell-Bruce, Earl of Cardigan, son of the 8th Marquess. The Brudenell family descends from Sir Robert Brudenell, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas from 1520 to 1530. His great-grandson, Sir Thomas Brudenell, was created a Baronet in the Baronetage of England, styled "of Deene in the County of Northampton", on 29 June 1611. On 26 February 1628, he was raised to the Peerage of England as Baron Brudenell, of Stanton Wyvill in the County of Leicester, and on 20 April 1661 he was further honoured when he was made Earl of Cardigan, also in the Peerage of England. It was created on 17 July 1821 for Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 2nd Earl of Ailesbury. On 18 March 1664, Robert Bruce, 2nd Earl of Elgin in the Peerage of Scotland was created Baron Bruce, of Skelton in the County of York, Viscount Bruce, of Ampthill in the County of Bedford, and Earl of Ailesbury, in the County of Buckingham, all in the Peerage of England.
