John Bowers (actor)
John Bowers (born John E. Bowersox; December 25, 1885 – November 17, 1936) was an American stage and silent film actor who starred in 94 films including several short subjects. He has been identified as being an inspiration for the character Norman Maine in '' A Star Is Born'' (1937). Early life and career Born John E. Bowersox in Garrett, Indiana, to George and Ida Bowersox, John Bowers attended Huntington Business College in Huntington, Indiana, where he became interested in acting. He joined a stock stage group and traveled until he landed in New York in 1912, where he appeared in Broadway productions. Bowers began his film career in 1914. Within five years, he became one of the most popular leading men. During his career he co-starred frequently with Marguerite De La Motte, whom he later married. John Bowers (bishop)
John Phillips Allcot Bowers (15 May 1854 – 6 January 1926) was Bishop of Thetford in the Church of England in 1903–1926. John Bowers was born in Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire and educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford, Magdalen School and St John's College, Cambridge. His first post after ordination was as a Curate at Coggeshall. From 1882 to 1903 he was Chaplain, Domestic Chaplain to the Charles John Ellicott, Bishop of Gloucester and went on to be Diocese of Gloucester, Diocesan Missioner and a Canon (priest), Residentiary Canon at Gloucester Cathedral (1890–1902). In January 1902, he was appointed Archdeacon of Gloucester before his appointment as Bishop of Thetford and Archdeacon of Lynn in 1903 which refers to Kings Lynn. John Bowers (November 27, 1912 – October 11, 2004) was a British diplomat and head of fundamental education at UNESCO for 20 years from 1947. He was the architect of UNESCO's activities worldwide in literacy and adult education. John Bowers was the son of Basil Bowers, headmaster of Cheltenham College Junior School, and was educated at Cheltenham College and Trinity College, Oxford. While still at school, he took up an interest in bird photography and had pictures published in '' Country Life''. After postgraduate courses in Arabic, Islamic Culture, Anthropology and Law, he joined the Sudan Political Service in 1935. John Bowers (born 2 January 1956) is a British barrister and part-time judge who has been Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford since 1 October 2015. Born in Grimsby, the son of Alfred Bowers and Irene (), he was educated at Clee Grammar School in Cleethorpes, and then studied law at Lincoln College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar in 1979, took silk (became a Queen's Counsel) in 1998, became a recorder in 2003, and has been a deputy High Court Judge since 2010. He is an honorary professor at the University of Hull. Bowers is a supporter of Grimsby Town F.C. He is married to Suzanne Franks and has three children. John M. Bowers (November 11, 1922 – August 21, 2011) was an American labor union leader. Biography Born in New York City on November 11, 1922, Bowers served as a radio operator in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he followed in a family tradition by becoming a longshoreman, and also joined the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA). He was a leading supporter of the union during its rivalry with the International Brotherhood of Longshoremen, and this led in 1954 to his election as president of his union local. In the role, he established a seniority system in hiring. In 1963, Bowers was elected as executive vice president of the union. John Bowers (born 1928) is an American writer. Bowers was raised in Johnson City, Tennessee, during the Great Depression and World War II era. He graduated from Science Hill High School in 1946 and from the University of Tennessee in 1951. From there, he attended the Handy Writers Colony in Marshall, Illinois, founded by Lowney Turner Handy and her husband, Harry Handy, along with her student, the best-selling novelist James Jones. An autobiographical account of this adventure is Bowers's first major book, the memoir ''The Colony'', published in 1971. John William Anslow Bowers (22 February 1908 – 4 July 1970) was an English footballer, who was twice the top scorer in the Football League and made three appearances for England. Playing career Early days Bowers was born in Low Santon, near Scunthorpe and, after playing for Scunthorpe works side Appleby Works, started his professional career with Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in December 1927.
