John Barbour (poet)
John Barbour (c.1320 – 13 March 1395) was a Scottish poet and the first major named literary figure to write in Scots. His principal surviving work is the historical verse romance, '' The Brus'' (''The Bruce''), and his reputation from this poem is such that other long works in Scots which survive from the period are sometimes thought to be by him. He is known to have written a number of other works, but other titles definitely ascribed to his authorship, such as ''The Stewartis Oryginalle'' (''Genealogy of the Stewarts'') and ''The Brut'' (''Brutus''), are now lost. Barbour was latterly Archdeacon of the Diocese of Aberden in Scotland. He also studied in Oxford and Paris. New Shoreham (UK Parliament Constituency)
New Shoreham, sometimes simply called Shoreham, was a parliamentary borough centred on the town of Shoreham-by-Sea in what is now West Sussex. It returned two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons of England from 1295 to 1707, then to the House of Commons of Great Britain until 1800, and finally to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 until it was abolished by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, with effect from the 1885 general election. A modern constituency called Shoreham existed from 1974 to 1997. Boundaries, franchise and boundary changes New Shoreham is a part of Shoreham-by-Sea, located around its port. The borough, in 1800, had about 1,000 electors. The qualification for the vote before 1832, unusually for a borough, was the possession of a 40 shilling freehold which was the normal franchise for a county constituency. John Barbour (footballer)
John R. Barbour (1 September 1890 – 15 July 1916) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as an inside right in the Scottish and English leagues for Queen's Park, Dundee and Preston North End. Personal life Barbour attended Hutchesons' Grammar School and later worked in the audit office for a railway company, in addition to serving as a territorial. Barbour served as a lance corporal in the Highland Light Infantry during the First World War and was killed at High Wood during the Battle of the Somme on 15 July 1916. John Strode Barbour (August 10, 1866 – May 6, 1952) was a Virginia lawyer, businessman, and politician. Early life and education Barbour was born on August 10, 1866 at Beauregard in Brandy Station, Culpeper County, Virginia. The Barbour political family, was one of the First Families of Virginia. His lawyer father James Barbour, had continued the family's political involvement, as well as served as a major in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. His mother was Fanny Thomas Beckham, and also bore daughter, Mrs. C.B. Wallace of Nashville, Tennessee. Barbour's private education included William Hartman Kable's Charles Town Male Academy in Charles Town, West Virginia. In 1884, Barbour began reading law at John Franklin Rixey's law office in Culpeper, Virginia. John Dougherty Barbour JP DL (3 March 1824 – 1901) was an Irish industrialist and politician. His middle name is sometimes written as "Doherty." Born in Castle Street, Lisburn, County Antrim, the son of William Barbour, he entered the linen business (William Barbour & Sons) established by his grandfather in Lisburn. His brother, Thomas Barbour, opened a branch of the firm in America. Amongst Barbour's children were Sir Milne Barbour, Bt. and Helen Reilly Barbour, who married Thomas Andrews, designer of the RMS Titanic Election controversy In 1863, Barbour was elected Member of Parliament for Lisburn as a Liberal.
