John Atkinson (rugby League)
John Atkinson (3 October 1946 – 23 December 2017) was an English rugby union and World Cup-winning professional rugby league footballer. He played in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and was a coach in the 1980s. Atkinson played club level rugby union (RU) for Roundhay RUFC, representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain and England, and at club level for Leeds and Carlisle as a . Wakefield Trinity is a professional rugby league club in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. The club play their home fixtures at the DIY Kitchen Stadium, Belle Vue (Wakefield), Belle Vue and currently compete in the Super League, the top tier of the British rugby league system. The club was one of the original twenty-two clubs that formed the Rugby Football League, Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895. Featherstone Rovers are a professional rugby league club in Featherstone, West Yorkshire, England. The club play home games at Post Office Road and currently compete in the Championship, the second tier of British rugby league. Featherstone Rovers have won the League Championship once and Challenge Cup three times. Their local rivals are Castleford and Wakefield Trinity, and in the Championship, Halifax. 1970–71 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1970–71 Rugby Football League season was the 76th season of rugby league football. Season summary Sunday afternoon rugby was allowed for the first time by the RFL on 17 December 1967. Initially most clubs chose not to switch away from Saturday's despite competition from football. The first ever Sunday fixtures were Bradford Northern v York, and Leigh v Dewsbury. St. Helens won their sixth Championship when they beat Wigan 16–12 in the Championship Final. Wigan had ended the regular season as the league leaders. The Challenge Cup Winners were Leigh when they beat Leeds 24–7 in the final. There was no county league competition this season, other than a break between the 1902–03 and 1906–07 seasons, and breaks for World War I and World War II, this was the first season in which the Lancashire League and Yorkshire League titles were no longer awarded. Wakefield is a cathedral city in West Yorkshire, England located on the River Calder. The city had a population of 109,766 in the 2021 census, up from 99,251 in the 2011 census. Belle Vue, also known as the DIY Kitchens Stadium for sponsorship reasons, in Wakefield, England, is the home of Rugby League club Wakefield Trinity RLFC and, previously, Association Football club Wakefield A.F.C. The Castleford Tigers are a professional rugby league club in Castleford, West Yorkshire, England. They play their home games at Wheldon Road (currently known as the Mend-A-Hose Jungle for sponsorship reasons) and compete in the Super League, the top flight of the British rugby league system. RFL Yorkshire Cup
The RFL Yorkshire Cup is a rugby league county cup competition for teams in Yorkshire. Starting in 1905 the competition ran, with the exception of 1915 to 1918, until the 1992–93 season, when it folded due to fixture congestion. The competition was open to all senior member clubs of the Rugby Football League in Yorkshire and was normally played in the opening months of the season. On two occasions, 1918–19 and 1940–41 the competition was held towards the end of the season due to the two world wars. During the Second World War the Lancashire Cup was not played for between 1941 and 1945 and several Lancashire clubs were admitted into the Yorkshire Cup competition instead.
