John Ashton (composer)
John Ashton (1830 – 25 December 1896) was a Welsh musician from Montgomeryshire Montgomeryshire, also known as ''Maldwyn'' ( cy, Sir Drefaldwyn meaning "the Shire of Baldwin's town"), is one of thirteen historic counties of Wales, historic counties and a former administrative county of Wales. It is named after its county tow ..., who had worked as a policeman and shoemaker. He wrote a number of songs and hymns, including ''Trefeglwys'', written in 1857. Ashton's songs were published in ''Miwsig y Miloedd'', ''Caniadau y Cysegr a'r Teulu,'' ''Llyfr Tonau Cynulleidfaol'', and ''Cerddor yr Ysgol Sabothol.'' He died in New Zealand, having emigrated there in 1874. A hymn is a type of song, and partially synonymous with devotional song, specifically written for the purpose of adoration or prayer, and typically addressed to a deity or deities, or to a prominent figure or personification.
