John Archibald Mills
John Archibald Mills (August 19, 1910 – April 15, 1986) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1955 to 1959 sitting with the Liberal caucus in opposition. Political career Mills ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1955 Alberta general election. He stood as the Liberal candidate in the electoral district of Lac Ste. Anne for the Liberal party. The race was hotly contested by all three candidates. Mills finished second behind incumbent Angelo Montemurro on the first vote count. He surged into first place on significant second preference votes from Co-operative Commonwealth candidate Harold Bronson to pick up the seat. Onoway
Onoway is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is approximately northwest of Edmonton at the junction of Highway 37 and Highway 43. History Two theories are behind the naming of the community. "Onoway" in Chipewyan translates to "fair field" while the variant "onaway" is used in ''The Song of Hiawatha'', a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Onoway's post office was established in 1904. Lac Ste
Lac is the resinous secretion of a number of species of lac insects, of which the most commonly cultivated is '' Kerria lacca''. Cultivation begins when a farmer gets a stick that contains eggs ready to hatch and ties it to the tree to be infested. Thousands of lac insects colonize the branches of the host trees and secrete the resinous pigment. The coated branches of the host trees are cut and harvested as sticklac. The harvested sticklac is crushed and sieved to remove impurities. The sieved material is then repeatedly washed to remove insect parts and other material. The resulting product is known as seedlac. William Patterson (December 11, 1908 – February 13, 1996) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1959 to 1967 sitting with the Social Credit caucus in government. Political career Patterson ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the electoral district of Lac Ste. Anne as a Social Credit candidate in the 1959 Alberta general election. He defeated incumbent Liberal MLA John Mills and two other candidates by a wide margin to pick up the district for his party and win his first term in office. The 1955 Alberta general election was held on June 29, 1955, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Despite losing almost 10% of the popular vote (compared to its 1952 proportion of the vote) and 30% of its seats in the legislature, the Social Credit Party, led by Ernest C. Manning, received a slightly higher number of votes than in 1952 and won a comfortable majority for its sixth term in government. The Liberal Party emerged as the principal opposition to the Social Credit juggernaut, winning over 30% of the popular vote, and increasing its legislative caucus from 4 members to 15.
