John Aldridge
John William Aldridge (born 18 September 1958) is a former football player and manager. He was a prolific, record-breaking striker best known for his time with English club Liverpool in the late 1980s. His tally of 330 Football League goals is the sixth-highest in the history of English football. During his early career, he worked his way up through the lower leagues, playing in every league from the old Fourth Division to the old First Division. Initially signed as a replacement for Ian Rush, Aldridge spent over two successful seasons at Liverpool, winning the league and FA Cup once, and narrowly missing out on a second league title. Aldridge spent two seasons at Real Sociedad, becoming the first non-Basque player to sign for the club in several decades as they abandoned their selective recruitment policy. Athletic Bilbao Signing Policy
Since 1912, the Spanish football club Athletic Bilbao has had an unwritten rule whereby the club will only sign players who were born in the Basque Country or who learned their football skills at a Basque club. The 1980–81 season of the European Cup Winners' Cup was won by Dinamo Tbilisi in the final against Carl Zeiss Jena. Dave Gwyther
David Gwyther (born 6 December 1948) is a former Wales Under-23 international footballer. Career A tall, strong striker he began his career with Swansea Town and was their top scorer for four successive seasons scoring 60 goals in 216 matches. In 1971 Gwyther was selected for the Football Association of Wales tour of Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia but these matches were not classed as international cap matches. He moved on to Halifax Town and Rotherham United. In 1979, he joined Newport County and partnered John Aldridge and Tommy Tynan during the most successful period in the club's history. Gwyther played in the team that won promotion to Football League Third Division and the Welsh Cup and in the subsequent season reached the quarter-final of the European Cup Winners Cup. Tommy Tynan
Thomas Edward Tynan (born 17 November 1955) is an English retired professional footballer. A hard working striker with flowing blonde hair, Tynan was signed as an apprentice for Liverpool by manager Bill Shankly after winning a talent contest run by the '' Liverpool Echo'' newspaper, but he never made a first-team appearance for the Reds, and was transferred to Sheffield Wednesday in 1976, where he spent two years and scored 31 goals. After just nine appearances for Lincoln City in 1978, Tynan moved on to Newport County where he formed a dynamic striking partnership with John Aldridge as the Newport team gained promotion from Division 4, won the Welsh Cup and reached the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners Cup. Somerton Park
Somerton Park was a football, greyhound racing and speedway stadium in Newport, South Wales. Football In April 1912 Newport County had been accepted to play in the Southern League for the 1912–13 season. Shortly afterwards, the site for the ground was obtained by the club's chairman Bert Moss. The stadium was nearly sold for housing in June 1919, but it was bought and transferred to a committee of employees from the John Lysaght's steel works. It remained the home of Newport County through many reformations until the club went bankrupt on 27 February 1989. County's 77 years at the stadium had brought many highs and lows, the most notable being the Welsh Cup and Fourth Division promotion triumph in 1980 and the European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final appearance in 1981, but the final few years brought the trauma of two successive relegations which saw the club lose its Football League status after 68 years, and finally go out of business on 27 February 1989.
