John A. Searing
John Alexander Searing (May 14, 1805 – May 6, 1876) was an American politician who served one term as a U.S. Representative from New York from 1857 to 1859. Biography Born in North Hempstead, New York, Searing completed preparatory studies. He was the sheriff of Queens County, New York from 1843 to 1846. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Queens Co.) in 1854. Congress Searing was elected as a Democrat to the 35th United States Congress (March 4, 1857 – March 3, 1859). He served as chairman of the Committee on Accounts (Thirty-fifth Congress). He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1858. Death and burial He died in Mineola, New York on May 6, 1876. James Rider
James Rider (March 5, 1797 Springfield, New York – April 30, 1876 Jamaica, New York) was an American politician from New York. Life He was the son of John Rider (ca. 1766–1846) and Antje (Van Nostrand) Rider (b. 1765). On November 17, 1818, he married Margaret Rhodes. He was Treasurer of the Merrick and Jamaica Plank Road Company from 1852 to 1854. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Queens Co.) in 1855. He was a Republican member of the New York State Senate (1st D.) in 1856 and 1857. He was buried at the Prospect Cemetery in Jamaica, Queens. Uniondale is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in central Nassau County, New York, on Long Island, in the Town of Hempstead, within the New York metropolitan area. The population was 32,473 at the time of the 2020 United States census. Uniondale is home to Hofstra University's north campus and a portion of its southern campus, as well as the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. History In the early 1970s, several Uniondale residents attempted to incorporate their hamlet as a village, citing dissatisfaction with the way their community was being represented on the board of the committee for redeveloping Mitchel Field, regarding matters like policies and the plans. Their incorporation plans were unsuccessful, and Uniondale remains an unincorporated hamlet governed by the Town of Hempstead. The 77th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 3 to April 17, 1854, during the second year of Horatio Seymour's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1846, 32 Senators were elected in single-seat senatorial districts for a two-year term, the whole Senate being renewed biennially. The senatorial districts (except those in New York City) were made up of entire counties. 128 Assemblymen were elected in single-seat districts to a one-year term, the whole Assembly being renewed annually. William Valk
William Weightman Valk (October 12, 1806September 20, 1879) was a soldier in the American Civil War and a U.S. Congressman. In 1830, Valk earned a degree in medicine, graduating from the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1830. He opened a practice in Connecticut. He joined the Navy during the Mexican–American War and became chief surgeon on the USS ''Constellation''. Valk joined the California Gold Rush in 1849 and, upon failure, opened a practice on Long Island. From March 4, 1855, to March 3, 1857, Valk served in New York's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives. Finally settled in Flushing, New York, and continued the practice of medicine until elected to Congress. He was elected as a candidate serving in New York's 1st District, as a member of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855 – March 3, 1857). The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature, with the New York State Senate being the upper house. There are 150 seats in the Assembly.
