John A. Nolan
John Alexander Nolan (August 14, 1930 – April 28, 2004) was a broadcaster and politician in Newfoundland. He represented St. John's South from 1966 to 1971 and Conception Bay South from 1975 to 1979 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of Leo Nolan and Rose Redmond, he was born in St. John's and was educated there. Nolan married Edith Snelgrove. He was an announcer for CJON Radio and TV. He was elected to the Newfoundland assembly in 1966. Nolan served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Municipal Affairs, Minister of Supply and Services and Minister of Economic Development; he was also president of the Treasury Board. Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. Conception Bay South is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011 there are 9,938 eligible voters living within the district. Composed of part of the town of Conception Bay South. A mix of rural and suburban populations, especially as the town of Conception Bay South grows. The district includes the communities of Foxtrap, Long Pond, Manuels, Kelligrews and part of Chamberlains. It is part of the St. John's metropolitan area. Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. CJYQ
CJYQ is an AM radio station broadcasting at 930 kHz in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Owned by Stingray Group and airing a country format, the station is currently branded as ''New Country 930''. History The station was launched in 1950 as CJON and was owned by the Newfoundland Broadcasting Company (Geoff Stirling and Don Jamieson), which launched CJON-TV in 1955. The company later launched additional AM stations throughout the province. In 1978, Jamieson transferred his interest in Newfoundland Broadcasting to Stirling in exchange for the AM stations. As part of the deal, the stations changed call signs, in CJON's case to CJYQ. All the new call signs ended in "Q", so the group became known as the ''Q Radio Network''. CJON-DT (channel 21), branded on-air as NTV (short for Newfoundland Television), is an English-language independent television station in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, owned by Newfoundland Broadcasting Company Ltd. The station's studios are located on Logy Bay Road in St. John's, and its transmitter is located in the city's Shea Heights section. History In 1955, Newfoundland Broadcasting Company Ltd., owner of CJON radio (now CJYQ), applied for and received a licence for the first television station in Newfoundland. Ferryland (electoral District)
Ferryland is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 8,571 eligible voters living within the district. This was the most strongly anti-Confederation area of the province in the late 1940s, but turned Liberal in the 1950s and 1960s. It is historically a fishing district, but tourism has been growing.
