Johanna Hurwitz
Johanna Hurwitz (born October 9, 1937) is an American author of more than sixty children's books. She has sold millions of books in many different languages. Life and career Hurwitz graduated from Queens College, New York with a degree in English and from the Columbia University School of Library Service with a master's in library science. After many years working as a librarian, Hurwitz wrote her first book, ''Busybody Nora'', in 1976, one of the first in the chapter book genre for transitioning young readers from shorter stories to novels. ''Busybody Nora'' took 17 tries for publishing companies to publish the book. Ravenstone Press published the book three months after Hurwitz submitted the story. Hurwitz's books include biographies for children on subjects such as Anne Frank, Astrid Lindgren, Leonard Bernstein, and Helen Keller. Her 1999 book, ''The Just Desserts Club'', combined related short stories with recipes. Hurwitz is the aunt of Garance Franke-Ruta and Ted Frank.'' ... Greenville, Rhode Island
Greenville is a village and census-designated place (CDP) in the New England town, town of Smithfield, Rhode Island, Smithfield in Providence County, Rhode Island, Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 8,658 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. ''New Shoes for Silvia'' is a 1993 Children's picture book by Johanna Hurwitz and illustrator Jerry Pinkney. It is about a girl, Silvia, who receives a present of a pair of red shoes that are too large for her, and what she does with them until many months later when they finally fit her. Reception ''Booklist'', in a review of ''New Shoes for Silvia'', wrote "The slight story is made stronger by Pinkney's watercolors, which warmly depict a close family life in a wholesome, often outdoor setting in Latin America." ''School Library Journal'' wrote "This simple story, told in spare prose, speaks universally to the imagination and emotions.
