Johann Leonhard Raab
Johann Leonhard Raab ( Unterschwaningen 29 March 1825 – 2 April 1899 Munich) was a German printmaker and painter.Friedrich Pecht: ''Verzeichnis der Abbildungen'', in: ''Schiller-Galerie ...'' sowie dito in: ''Goethe-Galerie ...'' Life After receiving his basic education in public schools in Nuremberg, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts there. Although he began as a painter, he was soon attracted to engraving and began formal studies with Samuel Amsler. At first, he concentrated on small plates for book publishers but, even then, his mature pictorial style became apparent. Eventually, in 1866, on the recommendation of Julius Thaeter (1804–1870), he was appointed to succeed the latter as Professor of Engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. He retired in 1895 and, with three of his friends, opened a painting studio. Raab's works can be found in several museums, including the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (4 May 1772 – 20 August 1823) was a German encyclopedia publisher and editor, famed for publishing the '' Conversations-Lexikon'', which is now published as the Brockhaus encyclopedia. Biography Brockhaus was educated at the gymnasium of his native Dortmund, and from 1788 to 1793 served an apprenticeship in a mercantile house at Düsseldorf. He then devoted two years at the University of Leipzig to the study of modern languages and literature, after which he set up in Dortmund an emporium for English goods. In 1801, he transferred this business to Arnheim, and in the following year to Amsterdam. In 1805, having given up his first line of trade, Brockhaus began business as a publisher. Two journals projected by him were not allowed by the government to survive for any length of time, and in 1810 the complications in the affairs of Holland induced him to return homewards. Doris Raab (19 October 1851 – 1933) was a German etcher and engraver. Biography Raab was born on 19 October 1851 in Nuremberg. She was the daughter of the artist Johann Leonhard Raab who was also her teacher. Doris Raab exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. She also exhibited her work at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The Alte Pinakothek (, ''Old Pinakothek'') is an art museum located in the Kunstareal area in Munich, Germany. It is one of the oldest galleries in the world and houses a significant collection of Old Master paintings. The name Alte (Old) Pinakothek refers to the time period covered by the collection—from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. The Neue Pinakothek, re-built in 1981, covers nineteenth-century art, and Pinakothek der Moderne, opened in 2002, exhibits modern art.
