Johan Ankerstjerne
Johan Valdemar Ankerstjerne (17 January 1886 – 18 August 1959) was a Danish cinematographer who for many years was head of cinematography at Nordisk Film. He was reportedly the best cameraman in Denmark in the 1910s, making many films for August Blom from 1911 until 1916 and then for Benjamin Christensen. He created the unique "images of Haxan". In 1932 he founded Denmark's first film laboratory, Johan Ankerstjerne A/S which, after merging with Nordisk Film Teknik, became the largest production facility in the country. Career Ankerstjerne first became a watchmaker in Randers. In 1907, he also became an operator in the town's first cinema. It was not long before he decided to make films himself, starting with short documentaries. When Nordisk Film expanded in early 1911, he was put on probation as a photographer but was quickly given a job in feature films. ''Häxan'' (, "The Witch"; Danish: ''Heksen''; English: ''The Witches''; released in the US in 1968 as ''Witchcraft Through the Ages'') is a 1922 silent horror essay film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Consisting partly of documentary-style storytelling as well as dramatized narrative sequences, the film charts the historical roots and superstitions surrounding witchcraft, beginning in the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Based partly on Christensen's own study of the ''Malleus Maleficarum'', a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, ''Häxan'' proposes that such witch hunts may have stemmed from misunderstandings of mental or neurological disorders, triggering mass hysteria. ''Pan'' is a 1922 Norwegian film directed by Harald Schwenzen. It was the first of four film adaptations of the novel of the same name by 1920 Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun, and one of the earliest Scandinavian adaptations of a Hamsun work (preceded only by a 1921 film of '' Growth of the Soil''). It tells the story of a romance between a wealthy woman and a soldier, and was filmed in Nordland and in Algeria (standing in for the Indian locations in the novel). Guðmundur Kamban
Guðmundur Kamban (8 June 1888 – 5 May 1945) was an Icelandic playwright and novelist. Biography He was born in the farm of Litlibær in Garðasókn, Iceland, son of a merchant of an old and well-known Icelandic family. He graduated from the College of Reykjavík, where he received honoris causa in literature and language. While still at college, he was made assistant editor of the best known newspaper in Iceland, edited by Björn Jónsson. In 1906 his psychic abilities were also investigated by the Experimental Society founded by Einar Hjörleifsson Kvaran: as a clairvoyant, he succeeded in divining the contents of closed books, and as an automatic writer he penned works supposedly by Hans Christian Andersen, Jónas Hallgrímsson, and Snorri Sturluson. But he lost his mediumistic abilities after a serious illness. Plot During a New Year's Eve party at the wealthy Ranton Manor, an escaped convict named "Strong" John Sikes trudges through the snow with his infant son. John breaks into the Ranton household and enters the room of Ann, the daughter of the family. He finds a jewelry box decorated with her name. It contains a pearl necklace, but he doesn't take it. The Ranton family and their guests are informed that John has escaped from prison and is wanted for murder. The partygoers gather weapons to hunt for the criminal, to Ann's disapproval. Atlantis (1913 Film)
''Atlantis'' is a 1913 Danish silent film directed by August Blom, the head of production at the Nordisk Film company, and was based upon the 1912 novel by Gerhart Hauptmann. It starred an international cast headlined by Danish matinée actor Olaf Fønss and Austrian opera diva Ida Orloff. The story, which tells the tale of a doctor who travels to the United States in search of a cure for his ailing wife, includes the tragic sinking of an ocean liner after it strikes an object at sea. Released only one year after the sinking of the RMS ''Titanic'', the film drew considerable attention as well as criticism due to similarities to the actual tragedy. The high production costs for ''Atlantis'' were not equaled by box office returns at that time.
