Johan Altenborg Paus
Johan Altenborg Paus (December 3, 1834 – April 16, 1894) was a Norwegian artillery officer who served as war commissioner. Prior to this he served as head of the Artillery Officers' School from 1868 to 1871 and inspector for the Main Line and Kongsvinger Line until 1874. He was also a lecturer at the Norwegian Military Academy, served on several government-appointed committees on military issues, was an active freemason, served on the boards of Christiania Military Society and the Norwegian Association of Hunters and Anglers. A member of the Paus family, he was a first cousin of the playwright Henrik Ibsen and the son of the lawyer Henrik Johan Paus. He was named for his father's foster father and uncle, Johan Altenburg, Henrik Ibsen's maternal grandfather. Henrik Ibsen shared the names Henrik Johan with his father. Norwegian Military Academy
The Norwegian Military Academy (), in Oslo, educates officers of the Norwegian Army and serves as the King's Royal Guard. The academy was established in 1750, and is the oldest institution for higher education in Norway. History The Commander-in-Chief of the Norwegian armed forces, Hans Jacob Arnold Jensen, sent a request to the King of Denmark-Norway in 1750 to establish a school of mathematics in Christiania. The King determined, through the Royal Resolution of 16 December 1750, to establish The Free Mathematical School (). It was the first institution offering higher education in Norway, but it did not give any extensive military education. The Paus family (), also styled ''de Paus'', is a Norwegian family that emerged as a priestly family from Medieval Oslo in the 16th century. Henrik Johan Paus
Henrik Johan Paus (3 October 1799 – 21 July 1893) was a Norwegian lawyer, government official and the uncle of playwright Henrik Ibsen. He was acting bailiff of Lower Telemark and Bamble in 1818, a civil servant with the Ministry of Finance 1819–1823, deputy governor of Hedemarken 1823–1826, sheriff of Hof 1826–1830, attorney-at-law and acting judge in Hedemarken 1830–1843, bailiff of Østerdalen 1843–1858 and bailiff of Øvre Romerike 1858–1860. Johan Andreas Altenburg
Johan Andreas Altenburg (1763–1824) was a Norwegian merchant and shipowner. He belonged to the patriciate of the port town of Skien and was the maternal grandfather of playwright and theatre director Henrik Ibsen. Biography Altenburg was born at Lille Ulefos, in Telemark, Norway. He was the son of sawmill manager Diderik Altenburg (1719–1766) and Marichen Johansdatter Barth (1737–1769). His parents died early. After the death of his father, his mother was married in 1767 to Engebreth Christopher Blom Bertelsen Bomhoff (1737–1800). After his mother's subsequent death, he and his siblings lived with their stepfather. Johan Altenburg was originally a ship's captain, but stopped sailing at a relatively young age. Christopher Henrik Holfeldt Tostrup (20 September 1804- 17 October 1881) was a Norwegian timber merchant and land-owner. Biography Tostrup was born at Hjelmeland Municipality, Hjelmeland in Rogaland, Norway. He was the son of infantry captain Nicolai Tostrup (1768–1858) and his wife Thale Margrethe Resen Holfeldt (1779–1860). He was one of eight siblings in a family which included goldsmith Jacob Tostrup (1806–1890) and politician Hans Tostrup (1799-1856) . In 1828, he was employed by Haagen Mathiesen (1759–1842) and became manager of Mathiesen's properties in Hurdal Municipality, Hurdal, Skedsmo Municipality, Skedsmo and Trysil Municipality, Trysil. Christopher De Paus
Count Christopher de Paus (10 September 1862 – 10 September 1943) was a Norway, Norwegian-born aristocrat, papal courtier and philanthropist. A member of the Paus family—the name means pope—he was heir to the Norwegian timber firm Tostrup & Mathiesen and inherited a fortune from his grandfather, timber magnate Christopher Henrik Holfeldt Tostrup, Christopher Tostrup. From the 1870s, he spent much of his life in Rome, where he converted to Catholicism. Nils Gude (4 April 1859 in Düsseldorf, Kingdom of Prussia – 24 December 1908 in Oslo, Christiania) was a Norwegian portrait painter. Biography Nils Gude was the son of the prominent painter Hans Gude (1825–1903) and the brother of diplomat Ove Gude (1853–1910). He was born in Düsseldorf, Kingdom of Prussia where his father was teaching at the Düsseldorf school of painting. Cemetery Of Our Saviour
The Cemetery of Our Saviour () is a cemetery in Oslo, Norway, located north of Hammersborg in Gamle Aker district. It is located adjacent to the older Old Aker Cemetery and was created in 1808 as a result of the great famine and cholera epidemic of the Napoleonic Wars. Its grounds were extended in 1911. The cemetery has been full and thus closed for new graves since 1952, with interment only being allowed in existing family graves. The cemetery includes five sections, including ''Æreslunden'', Norway's main honorary burial ground, and the western, southern, eastern and northern sections. The Cemetery of Our Saviour became the preferred cemetery of bourgeois and other upper-class families. It has many grand tombstones and is the most famous cemetery in Norway.
