Joe Screen
Joseph Screen (born 27 November 1972 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire), is a former British international motorcycle speedway rider. His major speedway honours include winning the World Under-21 Championship in 1993, the British Championship in 1996 and 2004, and the British League Riders' Championship in 1992. He earned 37 international caps for the England national speedway team and 7 caps for the Great Britain team. Chesterfield, Derbyshire
Chesterfield is a market town, market and industrial town in the county of Derbyshire, England. It is north of Derby and south of Sheffield at the confluence of the River Rother, South Yorkshire, Rivers Rother and River Hipper, Hipper. Getingarna
Getingarna was a motorcycle speedway club from Stockholm in Sweden. They hold the record for Swedish Championships with 14 league titles to their name. History The club's first name was Motorsällskapet and they competed in the very first Swedish speedway season in 1948. They adopted the name Getingarna the following season and rode at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium from 1949 to 1953. They later rode at the Gubbängens Idrottsplats and would go on to become the most successful speedway club in Sweden by winning 14 championships in 1952, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1974, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985 and (1989 as Stockholm United). The club nickname was the Wasps named after a rider called Bertil Andersson. In 1988, the team merged with the club called Gamarna and became Stockholm United. The Speedway Under-21 World Championship is an annual Motorcycle speedway, speedway event held each year organized by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) since 1977. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . British League
The British League was the main motorcycle speedway league in Britain from its formation in 1965 until 1995 when British speedway was restructured. It initially had a single division, with a British League Division Two, second division starting in 1968 (which was renamed the New National League in 1975 and subsequently the National League). The British League was formed in 1965 following the merger of the National League (1932–1964), National League and the Provincial League (speedway), Provincial League. Matches were held over a series of races, with two riders from each team taking part in each race. In 1995 it was replaced by the Premier League (speedway), Premier League for two years before the sport was restructured into three tiers with the formation of the Elite League (speedway), Elite League in 1997. British Speedway Championship
The British Speedway Championship is an annual motorcycle speedway competition open to British national speedway riders. The winner of the event becomes the British Speedway Champion. History Inaugurated in 1961 as a qualifying round of the Speedway World Championship it was open to riders from Britain and the British British Dominions, dominions. It was initially dominated by riders from New Zealand such as Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger because of the British Final forming part of the World Speedway championship qualifying rounds. The British League Riders Championship was an individual motorcycle speedway contest between the top riders (or two riders) with the highest Calculated Match Average, average from each club competing in the British League in the UK, or the top division of the league during the period when it had two or more divisions. History Similar tournaments had been held before the formation of the British League in 1965, including the Provincial League Riders' Championship, open to riders from the Provincial League. British Speedway Under 21 Championship
The British Speedway Under-21 Championship (also known as the British Junior Speedway Championship) is an annual speedway competition open to riders of British nationality aged at least fifteen on the date of the first meeting, and under twenty-one on 1 January in the year of the competition. The winner of the final is declared British Under-21 Champion. Previous winners include former World Champions Mark Loram and Gary Havelock. Format Sixteen riders plus three reserves take part in 20 heats with each rider facing each other once. The two riders which accumulate the highest number of points over the heats go straight to the final.
