Joe H. Tonahill
Joe H. Tonahill (1914–2001) was an American lawyer. Biography Tonahill was born in Hughes Springs, Texas. He was a graduate of the University of Texas and George Washington University. He married Violett Smith, daughter of Howard W. Smith in 1941. Howard W. Smith, a congressman, was his father-in-law. During his career, he worked on Jack Ruby and Melvin Belli Melvin Mouron Belli (July 29, 1907 – July 9, 1996) was a United States lawyer and writer known as "The King of Torts" and by insurance companies as "Melvin Bellicose". He had many celebrity clients, including Zsa Zsa Gabor, Errol Flynn, Ch ...'s cases. He was the co-founder of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association. He was also a wrestler. Posthumously, he was inducted to the Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame in 2018. Hughes Springs is a city in Cass and Morris counties in the U.S. state of Texas. At the 2020 census, its population was 1,575. The town was heavily damaged by an EF2 tornado on November 4, 2022. Geography Hughes Springs is located in western Cass County. A small portion extends west into Morris County. The city is located along state highways 11 and 49, which run concurrently through the city limits. TX 11 leads east to Linden, and TX 49 leads southeast to Avinger. Jack Ruby
Jack Leon Ruby (born Jacob Leon Rubenstein; March 25, 1911January 3, 1967) was an American nightclub owner who murdered Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963, two days after Oswald assassinated President John F. Kennedy. Born in Chicago, Ruby operated nightclubs in Texas. On November 24, 1963, two days after President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Ruby shot and mortally wounded Oswald in Dallas Police Headquarters and was immediately arrested. The shooting happened on live television. Ruby was convicted and sentenced to death. This was overturned on appeal, and he was granted a new trial, but Ruby fell ill, was diagnosed with cancer, and died of a pulmonary embolism on January 3, 1967. In 1964, the Warren Commission concluded that Ruby acted alone in killing Oswald, and that Ruby shot Oswald on impulse in retaliation for the Kennedy assassination.
