Joe Armstrong (1894–1975) succeeded Louis Rocca as chief scout of Manchester United after World War II. At United, Armstrong worked very closely alongside reserve team manager and follow scout, Jimmy Murphy, and the youth players that made their debut from the early 1950s onwards are a tribute to their scouting skills. Early in 1953, Joe Armstrong signed 15-year-old Bobby Charlton, who went on to become one of the greatest players in the world, being part of Manchester United's European Cup winning team of 1968 and the 1966 England World Cup winning team. Joseph Michael Armstrong (born 29 January 1939) is an English former footballer who played as an inside forward. Armstrong started his career with Leslie Boys Club before joining Leeds United in 1957. He moved on to Gateshead in 1959 without making an appearance for Leeds United. Joseph Leslie Armstrong (27 December 1950 – 20 April 2019) was a computer scientist working in the area of fault-tolerant distributed systems. He is best known as one of the co-designers of the Erlang programming language. Early life and education Armstrong was born in Bournemouth, England in 1950. At 17, Armstrong began programming in Fortran on his local council's mainframe. Armstrong graduated with a B.Sc. in Physics from University College London in 1972. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden in 2003. His dissertation was titled ''Making reliable distributed systems in the presence of software errors''. He was a professor at KTH from 2014 until his death. Career After briefly working for Donald Michie at the University of Edinburgh, Armstrong moved to Sweden in 1974 and joined the Ericsson Computer Science Lab at Kista in 1984. Initially, he was a member of his family's singing group, and later a member of The Mystery Men Quartet and then Mark209. While with the Mystery Men Quartet the groups radio single, Ready To Leave, reached the top 40 in the Singing News southern gospel music charts. While with Mark209, the group's first radio single, My Home In Heaven, reached the top 45 on the Singing News southern gospel music charts. Armstrong had features on both releases.
