Jock West
John Milns West, (28 February 1909 – 6 June 2004) was a Grand Prix motorcycle racer from Great Britain. Motorcycle career West was born in Belvedere, Kent to an English father and a Scottish mother. He initially concentrated on grasstrack racing on an Ariel motorcycle and was successful enough that the Ariel factory would sponsor him at the 1931 Manx Grand Prix. West progressed to compete in the 1933 Isle of Man TT where he impressed Triumph manager Edward Turner, who hired him as a rider. Afterwards, he took a job as sales manager for BMW. West rode a BMW to victory at the 1937 500cc Ulster Grand Prix held on the Clady Circuit. His win marked the first time that a non-British motorcycle had won the 500cc class at the Ulster Grand Prix. Vintage Motor Cycle Club
The Vintage Motor Cycle Club (VMCC) is a UK-based vintage motorcycle club with over 10,000 members, which aims to promote and preserve all makes of motorcycles over 25 years old. History The Vintage Motor Cycle Club was founded on 28 April 1946, by 38 enthusiasts at the Lounge Cafe, Hog's Back, near Guildford in Surrey, for owners of motorcycles manufactured before December 1930. Many of the founders rode to the first meeting on vintage motorcycles and had travelled from around the country in poor weather conditions. The first meeting had been organised by former journalist and wartime despatch rider, the late 'Titch' Allen, with the aim of promoting the use and preservation of vintage motorcycles manufactured prior to 31 December 1930. The Senior Tourist Trophy is a motorcycle road race that takes place during the Isle of Man TT festival, an annual event traditionally held over the last week in May and the first week in June. Robert Leslie Graham (14 September 1911 – 12 June 1953) was a British motorcycle road racing, road racer who competed in the 1930s and 1940s. He won the inaugural Grand Prix motorcycle racing List of Grand Prix motorcycle racing World champions by year, 500 cc World Championship in 1949 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, 1949. Early Career (1929–1939) Les Graham started racing at Liverpool's Stanley Speedway on dirt. In 1929 he entered a race on the Oswestry#Military, Oswestry Park Hall circuit, riding a second hand Dot Cycle and Motor Manufacturing Company, Dot-JA Prestwich Industries Ltd, JAP, and came second to Henry Pinnington on an AJS. 1947 Isle Of Man TT
The 1947 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy was the first race festival since 1939 due to the interruption of World War II. With the restart of racing, the ACU decided to add three Clubman-class races for production machines in Lightweight, Junior and Senior categories, making the festival a six-race event. It held in 9-13 June. Harold Daniell won the Senior TT at on a Norton and the Norton team were to dominate the Senior race until 1954. Speeds were somewhat lower than the pre-war races due to the low quality "pool" petrol available, and it would be another three years before Daniell's 1938 lap record was broken. Superchargers were banned for motorcycle racing from 1946, so that may have reduced speed too. AJS Porcupine
The AJS 500 cc Porcupine was a British racing motorcycle built by Associated Motor Cycles (AMC), which débuted in 1945 with a horizontal-engine designated E90S. The later E95 model was developed with an inclined-engine. AMC produced AJS Motorcycles Ltd, AJS and Matchles motorcycle, Matchless brands at the time. Racing history The motorcycle was originally designed by AJS to be supercharged, as were a number of pre-war racing bikes, but the FICM banned supercharging in 1946. The motor was then worked on to allow it to perform without a supercharger. Jock West first rode the machine at the 1947 Isle of Man TT where he experienced teething problems relegating him to a 15th place, although he recorded the third fastest lap time of the race.
