Joan Marion
Joan Marion Nicholls (28 September 19085 November 2001), known professionally as Joan Marion, was an Australian-born stage, film and television actress. Her family moved to Britain when she was three, and at eighteen she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she adopted the name Joan Marion. Subsequently, a busy stage star, she made the record books in 1934, when she appeared in two West End shows simultaneously, '' Men in White'' with Ralph Richardson and ''Without Witness''. She also famously turned down Jack Warner and a Hollywood career, describing him as "a horrid little man." Marion continued in the theatre and British films until her marriage to wine expert Louis Everette de Rouet. With the birth of her daughter she spent many years travelling the world with her family. ''Libel!'' is a play written by Edward Wooll. It debuted on 2 April 1934 at the Playhouse Theatre in London's West End, where it was directed by Leon M. Lion. Producer Gilbert Miller brought it to Henry Miller's Theatre on Broadway in December 1935, with Otto Preminger directing. Wooll, a barrister of the Inner Temple and Recorder of Carlisle, wrote the play under the pseudonym "Ward Dorane". Wooll wrote a novelization in 1935, and the play was adapted as a movie in 1959. Plot Sir Mark Loddon, a war hero and Member of Parliament, is suing a newspaper for libel. The paper claims that he is an impostor, a fellow soldier and friend of Loddon from the war who happened to resemble the original Loddon. George Anthony Armstrong Willis (1897–1976), known as Anthony Armstrong, was an English Canadian, Anglo-Canadian writer, dramatist and essayist. A humorist who contributed to ''Punch (magazine), Punch'' and ''The New Yorker'' magazines, he wrote well-plotted crime plays including ''Ten Minute Alibi'' (1933). Biography Anthony Armstrong was the son of George Hughlings Armstrong Willis and Adela Emma Temple Frere. ''Ending It'' was a 1939 BBC TV one-off play, written by Val Gielgud, and starring John Robinson, Joan Marion, and Dino Galvani. It was 30 minutes in duration. It was broadcast live on 25 August 1939. 1957 Australian adaptation The most unusual aspect of the production was that it was later remade for Australian television in 1957 at a time when Australian drama production was rare. It was directed by William Sterling. Broadcast live on Sydney station ABN-2 on 19 June 1957, a kinescope was made of the broadcast and shown on Melbourne television station ABV-2 on 19 July 1957.
