Joan Heckaman
Joan Heckaman (born May 30, 1946) is a former North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party member of the North Dakota Senate, representing the 23rd district. She served as Senate Minority Leader from 2016 to 2022. Heckaman was the Democratic-NPL nominee for lieutenant governor in 2016, running with Marvin Nelson. North Dakota Senate
The North Dakota State Senate is the upper house of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly, smaller than the North Dakota House of Representatives. Per the state constitution, North Dakota is divided into between 40 and 54 legislative districts apportioned by population as determined by the decennial census. The 2000 redistricting plan provided for 47 districts, with one senator elected from each district. Senators serve four-year terms. Elections are staggered such that half the senate districts have elections every two years. In the 2022 North Dakota elections, a ballot measure passed with 63.4% of the vote creating term limits of eight years in the North Dakota Senate, which was put into effect starting January 2023. Benjamin A. Vig is an American politician from North Dakota. He is a former member of the North Dakota House of Representatives and the Democratic Party nominee for lieutenant governor in the 2020 election. Vig graduated from Valley City State University in 2005. He defeated Bill Devlin in the 2006 elections to represent District 23 in the North Dakota House of Representatives. He lost his reelection bid to Devlin in 2010. Vig considered running for seat in the United States House of Representatives in the 2012 election, but opted against it. Brent Sanford (born December 23, 1971) is an American politician who was the 38th lieutenant governor of North Dakota from 2016 to 2023. A member of the Republican Party, he previously was Mayor of Watford City from 2010 to 2016. Career Sanford graduated from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1994. He is a Certified Public Accountant. He worked for Eide Bailly LLP from 1994 through 2002, and then became the chief financial officer of Transwest Trucks in Denver, Colorado. He moved back to Watford City in 2004, taking over his family-run car dealership. 2016 North Dakota Gubernatorial Election
The 2016 North Dakota gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 2016, to elect the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota, concurrently with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, as well as elections to the United States Senate, elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. This would have been the first time North Dakotans selected a governor under new voter ID requirements, in which a student ID was insufficient identification to vote, but a court ruling in August 2016 struck the down the provision; the election was held under the 2013 rules.
