Maria Concetta Chiarello (born 14 May 1963), known as Jo Chiarello, is an Italian singer, mainly active in the 1980s. Life and career Born in Palermo, at sixteen years old Chiarello won a beauty contest, , being noted by one of the juror, the singer-songwriter Franco Califano, who decided to produce her as a singer. Franco Califano (14 September 1938 – 30 March 2013) was an Italian lyricist, composer, singer-songwriter, author and actor. His songs sold about 20 million records during his career. Early life Born in an airplane above Tripoli, Libya, Califano lived most of his life in Rome (in whose dialect he usually sang) and Milan. Music career In the 1960s, he began his career in music as a lyricist and a record producer; among his first successes as author "", "", "". The Sanremo Music Festival 1981 (), officially the 31st Italian Song Festival (), was the 31st annual Sanremo Music Festival, held at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo between 5 and 7 February 1981 and broadcast by (RAI). The show was hosted by Claudio Cecchetto, assisted by the actress Eleonora Vallone and by the singer Nilla Pizzi (winner of the festival in 1951 and 1952). The winner of the festival was Alice with the song "Per Elisa". Massimo Troisi should have participated in the final night of the festival with three segments as a comedian, but just before he took the stage, he decided not to appear because of the cuts to his monologues that were required by RAI executives. The Sanremo Music Festival 1989 (), officially the 39th Italian Song Festival (), was the 39th annual Sanremo Music Festival, held at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo between 21 and 25 February 1989 and broadcast by (RAI). The show was presented by Rosita Celentano, Paola Dominguin, Danny Quinn e Gianmarco Tognazzi. Kay Sandvick and Clare Ann Matz hosted the segments from the Sanremo Casino where a number of foreign guests performed. The winners of the Big Artists section were Fausto Leali and Anna Oxa with the song " Ti lascerò", and Mietta won the Newcomers section with the song "Canzoni". Leali and Oxa were then selected to represent in the Eurovision Song Contest 1989, with "Avrei voluto".
