Jiří Čunek
Jiří Čunek (born 22 February 1959) is a Czech politician who was the leader of the Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party from December 2006 to May 2009. Čunek was also deputy prime minister and the minister for Regional Development in Mirek Topolánek's Second Cabinet until 23 January 2009. Since 2006, Čuněk has been senator from Vsetín and since 2 November 2016 he has been the governor of Zlín Region. Čunek was born in Gottwaldov (now Zlín), and after studying at a technical college, he worked as a car technician for a construction company in Zlín and as a safety technician in Zbrojovka Vsetín from 1982 to 1998. In 1990, Čunek became a member of KDU-ČSL. He was elected to the municipal council of Vsetín in 1994 and became mayor of the town in 1998. Zlín
Zlín (in 1949–1989 Gottwaldov; ; ) is a city in the Czech Republic. It has about 75,000 inhabitants. It is the seat of the Zlín Region and it lies on the Dřevnice River. It is known as an industrial centre. The development of the modern city is closely connected to the Bata Corporation, Bata Shoes company and its social scheme, developed after World War I. A Christian () is a person who follows or adheres to Christianity, a monotheistic Abrahamic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. ''Deník'' is a regional daily newspaper in the Czech Republic. History Originally owned by German publishing company Verlagsgruppe Passau (VGP), ''Deník'' has been owned by Penta Investments since 2015. VGP has a monopoly on the Czech regional press. In September 2006, regional newspapers across the Czech Republic were rebranded to ''Deník'' with a regional adjective appended, including ''Pražský deník'' (). Apart from the Prague-based version, further 72 regional newspapers were branded as part of this launch. The 2007 circulation of the paper was 328,319 copies, making it the second most read paper in the country. The circulation of ''Deník'' was 295,307 copies in 2008 and 247,987 copies in 2009. 2024 KDU–ČSL Leadership Election
A leadership election for KDU-ČSL was held on 18 October 2024. Marek Výborný was elected the new leader. Background Marian Jurečka became leader of the party in 2020. Under his leadership it became part of Spolu alliance which won 2021 parliamentary election and Cabinet of Petr Fiala was formed. KDU-ČSL became part of government. Voting preferences of KDU-ČSL dropped to 2% and Jurečka stated that he will decide whether he wil run for reelection after 2024 European Parliament election and 2024 Czech regional elections. He set up a task to complete if he wants to run for another term. Terms were to reverse the trend of declining preferences, succeed in the European election and succeed in regional and senate elections. A leadership election for Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-ČSL) was held on 27 May 2017. Mayor of Vsetín Jiří Čunek became leader of Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party, KDU-ČSL when he defeated Vlasta Parkanová. The incumbent leader was Miroslav Kalousek. Background Miroslav Kalousek resigned as leader of the party in August 2006 after he started negotiations with Czech Social Democratic Party about coalition supported by Communist Party.
